2.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Light amber colour, strong aroma of toffee. Initial ultra-brief sweet taste as well. There is more than enough bitterness here just from the strong alcohol with a hint of vodka. The hops are of course dominant but in a way almost redundant. I found it to be drinkable only a couple of ozs. at a time. It is like being hit over the head with a sledgehammer. Not a member of the cognescenti on this one.

This pours a clear orange gold with a small maybe 1 finger head of foam that soon shrinks to a fine layer. It has some nice lacing.
The smell has a nice balanced nose of piney hops and caramel malt with some alcohol. It's a light smell here but the balance makes it inviting.
The taste matches the nose nicely! Caramel malt working very well together with both piney and a bit of citrus hops. Nice overall taste here but man, the abv is definitely giving me a warm fuzzy feeling but it's only after the swallow.
Nice fairly thick mouthfeel and lightish carbonation. It finishes as balanced as it started. Quite a tasty DIPA and pretty drinkable given how strong it is...certainly worthy of a revisit.
Cost: US$7.99 a 4-pack and it's the 2008 vintage with "brewed by Flying Dog Brewery, Frederick, Maryland" on the label.
Aroma is nice and balanced, with malty caramel, raisins and citrus hops. Boozy and heavy. Taste is brutally bitter, with alcohol warmth, sweet with caramel and grassy bitterness. Full bodied, low carbonation. Nice, but trying to cover the booze with that amount of bitterness is too much for me. ryanscourt (1546) - Latrobe, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 23, 2017
Big and bold. Boozy, dry, dark fruit flavors. Definitly a sippe but quite enjoyable. Malt defintly takes a back seat. ipa4me4u (33) - New Jersey, USA - SEP 10, 2017
Amber in color. Very woodsy, dank , boozy aroma. Taste is about the same but is balanced well with lots of malts to make the 11.5% alcohol smoother. Try drinking 6 of there bad boys... RW80 (2841) - Hoogeveen, NETHERLANDS - SEP 3, 2017

IMHO a very well executed American strong ale, and not a double IPA.
Bottled, 355ml from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Amber with off white head. There are big, resinous, fruity hop notes from the off here, perhaps a touch of cough linctus and apricot, fiery alcohol notes but the sweeter notes overcome this. Mid roasted malts, quite smooth after 6 years of ageing. A big old beer for a Tuesday evenings cooking. explosivedog (1682) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - AUG 2, 2017
355ml bottle. Pours deep hazy orange. Caramel, orange, pepper, liquorice, grapefruit, very alcoholic finish. Strong bitterness. Big body. Big beer, and not bad. mikethebeast (1) - BROOKLYN, New York, USA - JUN 25, 2017 does not count
I love the bold taste from the double ipa and the appearance is tempting with label ; kornfed (1) - Minnesota, USA - JUN 14, 2017 does not count
Better at cellar temp than out of fridge. Best if pulled from fridge & left out 30+ minutes before opening. Bottle lists as DIPA, but it's definitely a strong ale. Aroma is toffee & boozy. Nice mouthfeel, not creamy but not watery. Good strong ale flavor (would make a horrible DIPA), slightly medicinal-tasting.
