Like Hunter S. Thompson...Gonzo Imperial Porter is deep and complex. This turbo charged version of the Road Dog Porter is mysteriously dark with a rich malty body, intense roasted flavors, and a surprisingly unique hop kick. With Gonzo weighing in at 9.2% ABV, it will bite you in the ass if you dont show it the proper respect. IBUs: 85

Very dark brown, almost black pour with a tan head. Aroma of fig and dark fruit. Dark fruit taste. Not any roast or coffee that I could pick up in the aroma or taste. Very smooth and drinkable. Not bitter at all despite the ABV. Alcohol well hidden. Very pleasant beer..... ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Even though my beloved Hunter S. Thompson would drink almost anything, he was partial to whiskey, particularly Chivas Regal and Wild Turkey, or tequila, but he also liked to drink beer as if it were water; while much of that beer was whatever flavorless yellow brew was available back in the day, he was open-minded enough to try beer with flavor. This is perhaps how he forged a friendship in Aspen with George Stranahan, the founder of this brewery, which has its roots in Aspen, Colo., even though now its brewed in Frederick, Md. Im unsure whether Hunter actually tasted this particular beer, but I think its safe to say he would have enjoyed it and not just because of its 9.2 percent alcohol. The 12-ounce bottle poured into a wide-mouthed goblet an opaque black with a tall whipped-cream-substance tan head. I find the aromas to be subdued, but I can faintly make out fresh-ground espresso and dark chocolate. The flavor is espresso latte, bitter dark chocolate, browned campfire marshmallows and sweet vanilla bean, followed by a perfectly balanced bitterness which is followed by a mellow boozy warmness. The bittersweet mouthfeel is lush and silky without being slimy and cloying. Like with all of the Flying Dog beers, it adorns artwork by Ralph Steadman, the British modern-day version of Pablo Picasso, except hes not an asshole (before you assail me, Im referencing the Burning Sensations tune from the Repo Man soundtrack). On the label it shows the famed skeletal Gonzo version of HST whose cartoon bubble is saying, OK, lets party. On the side of the label it shares the Hunter quote, It never gets weird enough for me. The Flying Dog Brewery has always had this aura for me. While partially reinforced by the HST and Steadman labels, Im also reminded of my introduction to this brewery in 1992 when I attended my first Great American Beer Festival in Denver. I recall Flying Dog handing out stickers that read, I like it doggy style. It became the theme of the night for drunken men to put onto the backs of drunken women this sticker and then bark and howl like a wild dog. It was sophomoric humor of which Hunter would undoubtedly approve, just as he would approve of his namesake brew the Gonzo Imperial Porter.

UPDATED: DEC 3, 2016 Bottle. Black beer with large light brown head, mostly lasting. Aroma of dark chocolate, dried fruits, plums, cocoa, with faint vanilla, coffee and resin notes - noble, malty with a touch of hops. Taste is really enjoyable, medium to heavy sweet, chocolate with a touch of dried fruits, followed by light to medium bitterness - roasted, coffee and resin. Some roasted aftertaste. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. Deep and delicious.

Pours pitch black with a medium tan head that dissipates instantly, leaving a thin espresso-like coating. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, dark fruits, hops and alcohol. Taste is bitter moka coffee, roasted bread, licorice. Full bodied, oily, viscous texture, bitter-sour, alcoholic finish.

Black colored, medium+ creamy tan head, nice lacing and long lasting. Aroma is of roasted malt, chocolate, some coffee, bit dark fruit and noticeable alcohol kick. Taste is medium+ sweet chocolate and roasted malt, some coffee, bit caramel, light dark fruit, some alcohol with noticeable warmth, medium- bitterness. Full- bodied, soft carbonation, creamy. Excellent, if the alcohol was only less pronounced it would be amazing. (bottle, Pivoljub, Ljubljana)

Piana średnio oczkowa, spora i średnio trwała. Barwa prawie czarna, nieprzejrzysta, z brązowymi refleksami. Aromat to kompilacja ciemnych słodw i chmielu - czekolada, prażone ziarno i żywica. W smaku płsłodkie, analogicznie jak w zapachu, dodatkowo prażony karmel, sypkie kakao, lekka popiołowość i pikantność w posmaku. Goryczka średnia do niskiej, ziołowo palono żywiczna.

Estupenda Imperial Porter. Espuma beis, color negro. Densa. Mucho sabor. Para disfrutar. Entre las mejores sin duda.

Dark brown, brown medium head, medium carbonation and full body. Chocolate and roasted malt aroma with a hint of coffee. Flavour is coffee, chocholate and roasted malt. Goes from sweet chocolate and burned caramel into a dry roasted and hoppy bitter aftertaste.
