COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

UPDATED: FEB 17, 2008 2008-02-08, bottle at Plan B, Copenhagen, vintage 2007, 6-4-8-4-15=37
Dark brown color with red shades; thick head. Strong aroma of caramel, some cookies, alcohol too. Full bodied, with a round mouthfeel; it has a good but monodimensional sweet caramel flavor, loads of it, and the alcohol really warms the mouth as few other beers. The bitterness is balanced. Powerful, good, but no thrills.

Dark brown color; thick head. Creamy aroma, sweet, with some caramel and a touch of wood, maybe very light vanilla. Thick body, a bit oily texture, with a strong caramel flavor, nutty, and a reasonably strong bitterness at the end, when also the alcohol starts burning. Powerful but not special.

UPDATED: MAY 20, 2010 A big, big beer. Poured a rich amber color with a medium off-white head. Nice malt aroma gives way to a sweet, balanced blend of malt and hops. Quite smooth, low carbonation. Really tasty.

6/11/11/9/9/10

Bottle from Utobeer. Hazy ruby colour. Not sure that many hops really work with the malts which are syrupy nor the alcohol. Bit soapy on aroma. Hot alcohol and then some syrup and some very thing bitterness. Not a great barley wine. After JW Lees Harvest ale 2003, this is a bit uncultured and a bruiser. Hops are too metallic. fruit comes from the syrupy malts. Poor for its style. Would I have it again? No.

Bottle, 2007 vintage. It pours a nice ruby body, clear but hard to see through, with a minimal biege head. More just a broad ring of bubbles actually. When pouring, its not hard to detect its a barley wine, one can sense that its going to be a warming, sweet and hoppy beer. When sticking my nose into the glass, it sends out aromas of sweetish maltyness, dried fruits and dark berries, a cute little licorice scent, some hops, but not very much, and theres a touch of bread too. In the mouth, the alcohol is very present, but in a pleasant way, due to the sticky sweetness? It has some syrupy qualities in the mouth. Theres also dried fruits and some berries, and a little bitterness from the hops, but its far from dominating. Some notes of pine and citrus though. A bready, roasted flavor and some licorice is also found, but thats just in the background. It finishes rather sweet and malty, with the alcohol warming for a long time, suiting this cold May evening very well. Even though I like my barley wines low on hops, a little bit more wouldnt hurt. But no problem, the beer works just fine, and gave me a nice half an hour of joy. Be sure not to serve it too cold, it needs some temperature to open up(080520)
