Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

December 2016 - Bottle from my stash shared at LKS Towers. As Flying Dog Horn Dog Barley Wine, around 4-5 years aged. Ruby red, maybe amber, translucent, foamy off-white head. Aroma is toffee and caramel. Pretty simple syrupy nose. Body is smooth with soft carbonation. Taste follows honey, toffee, very rich and sweet, the booze in the finish cuts through the sweetness a little. Decent overall. (3.3)

Bottle, bbf 2014 thanks to Dirty D. It pours deep red - brown with a medium beige head. The aroma is rich, very sweet, brown bread, sticky dried fruits, fruit cake, booze, brandy, toffee and brown sugar. The taste is slick, sweet, sticky, toffee, brown bread, fruit cake, spicy, booze, brandy, christmas cake, toasty brown sugar, and wood with a dry, earthy finish. Full body, fine carbonation and sticky mouth - feel. Sweet, yes, but actually not too bad. Decent for style.

Bottled. 2015 vintage. Pours murky brown chestnut color. White tan head. Aroma is fig, dark fruit, plum, raisin, some boozy notes, sugar, caramel, bready. Flavor is fig, plum, dark fruit, molasses, bready, full bodied, sugar sweetness, some mild bitter hop notes in the finish. Very English style, sort of has some Belgian notes in that theres dark fruit and sugar sweetness. Not too Barleywine-ish for me, maybe more English strong ale quality? Hard to say where Id place this. Id say Barleywine is fair enough. Decent, not my favorite Barleywine (a bit sweet) but still quite good.

Impresionante aspecto. Espuma beige, densa y duradera. @Botella. BB 2015/01/09

Horn dog pours a deep, murky root beer brown body that has many small floaters, the thin tan cap didnt leave hardly any lace. Aromas of dark sweet fruits like fig, plum, cherries and alcohol all showing up. Flavors of malts, bread, with slight fruit hints showing up, it was very sweet with an alcohol finish. Although it did have many flavors none stayed too long (no aftertaste), it wasnt as big or complex as other barleywines but that in itself isnt a bad thing. This might be a good starter for folks trying this style for the first time. Overall i thought it was pretty good and worth a try, but i probably wont get it again. Originally rated on 11/25/08.
