COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

12 oz bottle into tulip. Minneapolis. Appearance: copper in color. Small white head. Aroma: bitter hops, caramel, yeast. Taste: sweet with a bitter undertone. Palate: medium body. Long finish. Smooth texture. Overall: a very nice beer. Hops add an interesting dynamic to the beer.

UPDATED: JAN 20, 2018 Bottle from Beer Hawk. Hazy auburn with a nice off white head. Smells yeasty and indeed it is. Strong, bitter taste with banana and citrus.

Thuis uit een flesje. Mooie heldere amberkleur, beige schuim, fijne belletjes. Puike hoppige smaak, goede bitterheid, maar niet te. Uitstekend.

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2018 Don’t like the combination of flavors here. Too strong of an alcohol taste and only the bad flavors from Belgian ales with just extra hops thrown in

UPDATED: JAN 4, 2018 Bottle as gift. Pours a clear copper gold with brown edge. A lovely caramel coloured fluffy head. Nose has caramel and orange zest up first. There’s a balancing light herb with pepper. An alcohol warmth develops to a boozy fruit cake finish. The taste has caramel and citrus with a sugary sherbet edge. Then comes the boozy finish. The beer has a soft full body with a gentle semi dry carbonation. This a warm boozy IPA with a sweet toffee and fresh citrus balance.

Caramel apple spice yeast with some alcohol at the finish. Not much hops going on here or carbonation. Smooth drinking, pleasant enough - reminded me of an English ale somewhat but it's not my style. Although it was nice for a change I probably wouldn't give it a second try, it is somewhat flat and underwhelming.

Malty, dark and twisted IPA - yes, I know, easy to describe most Flying Dog brews in this way but this is what the brewery is known for. There is a hint of that Belgian influence, but personally it is very subtle in the mix. The Stone Belgique IPA is probably a better example, in my eyes at least. Raging Bitch is one of the brewery’s stronger offerings. Personally, I prefer Snake Dog and the Session IPA (I forget the name) but this is a decent and pleasant offering. Can’t really go wrong with a Flying Dog.

Appearance: deep amber body with a white head. Aroma: malt, brown sugar, cookies, butter and pine first and foremost. Taste: caramel like sweetness balanced out by a hoppy aftertaste. Palate: full bodied, smooth. Overall: the malt is definitely in the foreground here. A good brew, but there's room for improvement. More fruity hoppiness and we're gucci.
