Wild Rice Double IPA. The fourth stop on our multi-year trip to explore New Jersey takes us to one of the most maligned places in the state- the Hackensack Meadowlands. It’s the place usually identified with landfills, pipelines, mob burials (alleged) and sports teams that say they’re from New York.

Although no longer home to forests of giant cedars and salt hay marshes teeming with aquatic life, the Meadowlands is still an amazingly diverse ecosystem providing vital animal and plant habitat. In a nod to a once common food plant here, we’ve brewed this beer with wild rice. We also used brown and white rice, as well as two malts.

Rice helps the beer ferment dry to better showcase the five different hops we’ve added. Lots and lots of them. We then dry-hopped this Double IPA with even more-generous additions of Chinook and Citra hops to create a nose that hints at tangerine, mango, papaya and pine.

Malts: MFB pilsner malt
Hops: City, Columbus, Centennial, Simcoe and Chinook
Wild Rice, Brown rice
Yeast: Chico
Original Gravity: 6.6 Plato

Pleasantly surprised. Very light / crisp brew for such a high ABV. Pours straw yellow with thin white head. Aroma is hoppy citrus. Medium bodied, taste is muted hops. Finishes dry and bitter. Nicely done.

12 ounce bottle. Brassy gold color. Small frothy beige head. Clinging lace. Fragrant citrus aroma. Spicy pine notes. Flavor is bittersweet toasted malt flavor. Peppery notes. Dry, crisp notes. Complex and spicy with warming alcohol notes.

Smooth & tasty double ipa! Pretty orangish pour w/ a white head & some lacing. Aroma is robust w/ a variety of hops! The taste is also a mixed bag of hops but is actually refreshing & easy drinkable at 8+%. Well done!

Pours a clear golden with a pillowy white head which lingers......aroma is citrus and pine and malt.......taste very malty, slight citrus, bread dough, nice even bitter finish yet all very subtle and nothing dominating.

DATA: January 22, 2017... OCCASION: finishing a weekend with another strong Flying Fish... GLASSWARE: Duvel tulip...pours a crystal clear golden body that sports a central, vicious swirl... a spongy, fuzzy half-finger head that smears to uneven swirls and billows... mango, tangerine, and pine are fresh and alluring... biscuit and cracker suggest balance... rather straightforward, and that is okay... purses the lips in bitterness, kicks the throat with some spiciness, and warms calmly... the flavor profile is tangerine, mango, pepper, pine and some phenol...light bread doesn’t interfere with the sharp bitterness... a clean, smooth double IPA that finishes with pleasant effervescence and maintains its strength with the feel of a dry chardonnay...

Faint smell of pine. Clear golden color. Nice hop flavor with a lasting bitterness and warmth. Pretty good and different from most other double ipa’s.

$3.99 bottle from Gilly’s. Pours a tiny bit hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma is peach, grapefruit peel, pine, and some small caramel malts. Flavor is tangy up front: fruits, including grapefruit peel and lemon, followed by hints of floral hops and honey, then gets a bit heavier with pine. Not syrupy, like many DIPAs I’ve had. Not bad at all. Quite good, actually.

Poured from 3 bottles of of a mixed six, pours cloudy amber with a hint of orange and a few champagne bubbles at the start. Taste is spicy hops, some fruit, citrus, is the grittiness coming from the rice? great. Good and strong.

12 oz. bottle with a best by date of 12/7/2016. Clear in color gold with slow steady carbonation. Aroma is similar to sake mixed with light pine and mild fruit.

Interesting flavor; mango in the center followed by rice with a lightly piney, lingering bitterness. Bitterness is moderate to strong with a lasting effect. Body is medium with a decent mouthfeel. I definitely appreciate the substitution of the yeast for the rice. Creative.
