Defying real focus (how unlike us!), we had to call Hoptical Illusion an Almost Pale Ale (5% Alc./Vol. / IBU 17.5 / Colour SRM 3.44). Hoptical Illusion approaches the characteristics of a pale ale, but takes a quick u-turn at the end. At 18 IBUs versus 25 and up for English Pale Ales, were hoppier than most commercial beers, but not too crazy. The star of the show is the dizzying aroma of the privately grown Amarillo hop. Beyond the provocative citrus and floral essences that resonate from the Amarillos small, tight cone is a subtle but unique maltiness blended from amber kiln and roasted specialty malts. Finishing with a final Amarillo reference, Hoptical Illusion is a beer that doesnt beat you over the head, steal your wallet, and jack your car. But you still wouldnt want meet it in a dark alley.

From tap at the Hoppy Pub, Thessaloniki. Clear amber color with off white head. Malty and light (old) hoppy aroma, caramel, bread, light citrus, pine, grass. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma. Medium oily body with soft carbonation. Probably not fresh.

Bottle at home. Aroma is bready malt, caramel, soft earthy hops, mild fruits, toffee, tea, with a hint of pine. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Body is medium. A bit on the malty side for my taste, but certainly enjoyable.

UPDATED: OCT 20, 2016 Nice clear amber with a creamy head and good lacing (the darkest pale ale Ive ever seen). Sweet aroma of caramel and resins. Taste goes malty, some caramel, but nicely balanced by some fruity hops. Low bitterness, light body and a nice taste!

Light brown colour with thin lacy head. Aroma and flavour have some malty elements with some toasty malt and a touch of fruity sweetness. Moderated bitterness.
