Defying real focus (how unlike us!), we had to call Hoptical Illusion an Almost Pale Ale (5% Alc./Vol. / IBU 17.5 / Colour SRM 3.44). Hoptical Illusion approaches the characteristics of a pale ale, but takes a quick u-turn at the end. At 18 IBUs versus 25 and up for English Pale Ales, we’re hoppier than most commercial beers, but not too crazy. The star of the show is the dizzying aroma of the privately grown Amarillo hop. Beyond the provocative citrus and floral essences that resonate from the Amarillo’s small, tight cone is a subtle but unique maltiness blended from amber kiln and roasted specialty malts. Finishing with a final Amarillo reference, Hoptical Illusion is a beer that doesn’t beat you over the head, steal your wallet, and jack your car. But you still wouldn’t want meet it in a dark alley.

Bready flavour, with a smooth finish. Average carbonation, plain colour. A good balance of bitterness for a Pale Ale.

Botella. Francamente buena

5%ABV. Pale Ale. Poured out deep amber. 12ºSRM. Nose is nutty with peanuts, roasted chestnuts, overall the nose is reminiscent of an amber ale. Mouthfeel is light soapy. Palate has bread crusts, wheat toast, water biscuits, pale raw peanuts, Hops are earthy, vegetal, sap, resinous with some oleander sap at the end, lingering. Finish is medium-long with oleander sap at the back of the tongue.

AgentAle (1807) - Alberta, CANADA - DEC 6, 2016
Aroma is dark malts, caramel, citrus and a light earthiness. Taste is medium bodied grain with caramel, honey, light rye spiciness and some earthy bitterness on the tip. Appearance is a hazy amber with a medium pearl head that retains fairly well.

Bottle at Kafé Van Zanten, Amersfoort. Somewhat pale amber with a small off-white head. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Nice bitter and subtle sweet tones. Caramel, malts, hops, bread and ripe fruits. Nice one.

Tapped at the brewery. Clear brown color. Aroma of fresh wood planks, nuts, malt and some sour fruits. Interesting. Taste is bitter fruits, some red dry wine. Dry bitter fruits finish. Strange beer. I don’t know what to think of it. The cascade and amarillo hops make a strange flavor. Drinkable.

Really nice APA. Pours a dark Amber color. Citrus and pine aromas. Same goes for the taste except also has some bread and caramel notes.

rouhlas (3736) - Thessaloniki, GREECE - SEP 24, 2016
From tap at the Hoppy Pub, Thessaloniki. Clear amber color with off white head. Malty and light (old) hoppy aroma, caramel, bread, light citrus, pine, grass. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma. Medium oily body with soft carbonation. Probably not fresh.

kaserov (925) - Oviedo, SPAIN - SEP 22, 2016

tricksta_p (5017) - Steenwijk, NETHERLANDS - SEP 17, 2016
Bottle at home. Aroma is bready malt, caramel, soft earthy hops, mild fruits, toffee, tea, with a hint of pine. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Body is medium. A bit on the malty side for my taste, but certainly enjoyable.
