COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Defying real focus (how unlike us!), we had to call Hoptical Illusion an Almost Pale Ale (5% Alc./Vol. / IBU 17.5 / Colour SRM 3.44). Hoptical Illusion approaches the characteristics of a pale ale, but takes a quick u-turn at the end. At 18 IBUs versus 25 and up for English Pale Ales, we’re hoppier than most commercial beers, but not too crazy. The star of the show is the dizzying aroma of the privately grown Amarillo hop. Beyond the provocative citrus and floral essences that resonate from the Amarillo’s small, tight cone is a subtle but unique maltiness blended from amber kiln and roasted specialty malts. Finishing with a final Amarillo reference, Hoptical Illusion is a beer that doesn’t beat you over the head, steal your wallet, and jack your car. But you still wouldn’t want meet it in a dark alley.

Tranquillity (2251) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - SEP 26, 2015
Draft. Clear red brown body, fine medium head. Almost smoky aroma, like weed. Musky, but very nice. The taste is refreshingly hoppy, with a fullness of nutty flavours to go with it.

jamaty (2118) - Madrid, SPAIN - SEP 19, 2015
Cuerpo moderado, gas perfecto. Final amargo, y con mucho de todo. Grande sin necesidad de mucha graduación.

"I like that there’s always a clever/funny message under the bottle caps. Mine says "That’s what she said". Ok, not that funny. Well, this one poured a dark amber colour with a thin layer of head, just a bit foamy. Has good lacing. Hops are strong in the aroma but mixed well with the malts. Also a bit of barley, grains, somewhat smokey. Flavours are also very hoppy but not as in your face as their Smashbomb IPA. Much more subdued and actually pretty smooth. Very good."

KoNrRiI (1480) - Århus, DENMARK - AUG 28, 2015
0.355 bottle. Clear, light brown color and a medium, off-white head which leaves a basic lacing. The aroma is obviously hoppy but with a strong, malty, resinous backbone. Taste is bittersweet; naturally the bitterness comes from hops while the sweetness is somewhat fruity but also malty and caramel in character. Medium body, slick texture, and soft carbonation. Finish is long, filled with caramel, brown sugar, resin, and some wood. Overall a surprisingly good beer.

On tap at the Arrow and Loon.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber colour with a finger or so of white head. Average retention and a fair amount of lacing.

Aroma: Malt, grass and hops.

Flavours: Malt, hops, hint of caramel.

Mouthfeel: Average viscosity and carbonation.

Overall: I can’t believe I haven’t rated this already. I like the good malt/hop balance on this one. While I tend to prefer the speciality beers that Flying Monkeys produces, this is a great go to beer available year round that always comes through.
