COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Defying real focus (how unlike us!), we had to call Hoptical Illusion an Almost Pale Ale (5% Alc./Vol. / IBU 17.5 / Colour SRM 3.44). Hoptical Illusion approaches the characteristics of a pale ale, but takes a quick u-turn at the end. At 18 IBUs versus 25 and up for English Pale Ales, we’re hoppier than most commercial beers, but not too crazy. The star of the show is the dizzying aroma of the privately grown Amarillo hop. Beyond the provocative citrus and floral essences that resonate from the Amarillo’s small, tight cone is a subtle but unique maltiness blended from amber kiln and roasted specialty malts. Finishing with a final Amarillo reference, Hoptical Illusion is a beer that doesn’t beat you over the head, steal your wallet, and jack your car. But you still wouldn’t want meet it in a dark alley.

Excellent beer. Great aroma, darkish colour, tasted quite hoppy though not as much so as a Tankhouse, maybe a little citrus and well rounded malts. Its the kind of nice hoppy beer you could drink more than oe of easily. Not just a sipper. I’m liking this brewery as I also like the Robert Simpson Confederation Amber.

Bottiglia.

Bottle served without a glass at Potbellys opposite the R.O.M. in Toronto. Couldn’t see the colour or judge the appearance, hence middle score. Toast and citrus aroma. Floral hops, some citrus flavour, a hintof nutty malt, but generally quite restrained. The blurb suggests they’ve aimed for the middle of the road, and got it bang on.

Aroma: Subtle citrus fruit and toasted notes. Appearance: Dark ambar color with clear liquid and white head. Taste: Medium bitterness with light sour notes. Palate: Medium body with thin texture and soft carbonation. Toast and citrus fruits finish. Overall: Strong freatures and easy to drink, it leaves a woody memory.
