"Holy Hop, Batman, this beer has aroma." Hops are casted nine different times, it’s a breath-deep-and-shudder-with-pleasure kind of scent that’s all from the Citra hops. With a high alpha acid of 11%, Citra has a cacauphony of flavours and aromas --Citrus, passion fruit, grapefruit, lime, melon, lychee fruit, pineapple, mango, and papaya – and dominates this beer.

Smashbombs olfactory tropical explosion shockwaves your face every time you lift the meringue foam towards you. It’s like the ecru-coloured top of a beer pie before it gives up and grips the glass. You can see the Victory malt’s signature in the amber lights in what is primarily a deep golden beer. And, yes, don’t be fooled --there’s malt going on here, too, as you’ll see in the firey body of this ale that makes Smashbomb Atomic look like it radiates its own energy.

With the first taste, Smashbomb’s 70 IBUs are pronounced. This brew is a little bitter, but bitter like a grapefruit with three tablespoons of sugar on top. It’s also incredibly drinkable. The oddity that’ll keep you tipping the glass is that as this citrus peel front subsides, you actually gleen the sweet flavours of the Victory and Crystal malts. Then, as the bread-puddin’ bicuity sweetness of the malts are chased by the dry, tropical flavour of Citra and the fruit punch bouquet is all in your face with each sip, it’s all is so damn intriguing, you’ll be driven to keep on sampling...and sampling.

Nice amber color, good cloudy beige head. Aroma has caramalt, pine and resin. Medium-bodied. Front has maltyness (even a bit nutty), then citrus and pine. Doesn’t feel fresh enough. Just ok.

Excellent !

I’m having me some one year old Smashbomb Atomic IPA today! Why even bother with a bottle this old? I’m curious. Now! It comes in at 6% ABV and 72 IBUs, and it’s brewed with Citra hops only. It pours clear and golden with a slightly off-white head. The aroma is nice and citrusy with some grassy and dank notes as well. It’s more dank that citrusy. The taste is very nice and fruity up front. Citrus, grapefruit and then a whole lot of sweet malts towards the end. The aftertaste is somewhat sweet as well, but it finishes on a very clinical citrusy note. The malts are overpowering the hops. But to be fair, if this was fresher it would be a helluva lot hoppier (I guess). At this moment it sits nicely as a faded West Coast style IPA with the malts in the driver’s seat. It’s still bitter and refreshing, but it’s surely not what it’s meant to be.

Translucent dark-orange pour; fruity berry and orange scent, sweet malt, pine and herbal on the back end. Taste is bready, roasted malt, with some relatively dry (almost medicinal) hop bitterness on the finish... mango and orange notes are a bit buried under the bread bomb and somewhat rough hop. Merely OK.

Lilly, onion, pencil shavings aroma. Hazy copper, thick yellow head, good lace. Marigold, Medium body, easy carbonation, slightly resinous. Kind of a throwback.

Rated on 5-15-2017. The appearance of this bottled beer is a large off-white head that is mostly lasting, transparent golden body, fizzy, fast rising carbonation, and virtually no lacing. The aroma is citrus hops, grapefruit, light pine, earthy, sweet, and caramel malt. The flavor presents moderate-heavy bitterness, citrus hops, grapefruit, some pine, toffee, fruity, sweet, and caramel malt. The mouthfeel is lively carbonation and this beer is medium-full bodied. This is a very drinkable IPA with a moderate bitter aftertaste. There is more bitterness than hops in the taste. This is a beer that I would drink again.

Draft glass @ Billie’s Bier Kafétaria. Near clear amber, creamy tanned head. Nose is pine resin, surprisingly malty, caramel, nice malty, bread,... Taste is bit low on hop, surprisingly malty, caramel, bread, some lingering pine, not all that hoppy actually,... Malty, bit empty bodied. Not bad malty brew, not what I expected but good malt profile.

The app is failing again. None of my reviews today posted. Draft taproom. Pours golden. Aroma is slightly citrus, minor pine. Flavor is citrus peel, wet dog, pine, roasted malt. Kind of bland. Of course I spilled a good bit of it so all I have left is a mouthful, but nothing special here.

Appearance: clear pale amber with two fingers of fluffy ivory head diminishing gradually to a thin cap, moderate lacing. (4/5) Aroma: pithy grapefruit, pine, caramel malt. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate-high bitter. (7/10) Palate: medium slightly oily body, moderate carbonation, off-dry lingering bitter finish. (4/5) Probably one of the first true craft beers I ever tried - so perhaps it’s at least partly to blame for my current hop obsession? This one’s a bit past its BB date, but that hasn’t harmed it overly much - perhaps a tad less citrus on the nose than I remember, but still a solid performer. I certainly don’t regret snagging a couple to have while working on the basement. Interesting that the first time I rated it, I was sufficiently confused and intrigued by the high hops that I called it "at least a 6/10, perhaps more after I’ve gotten used to it." Yeah, well, I’m used to it, and it’s more. (15/20) 7.5/10 #ryansbooze ryansbooze.com
