I’m not a huge barrel fan, but then again I can’t really see what the barrel adds to this beer. Especially using the Pappy - you’ve gotta figure if you use these barrels it should be well-employed. The beer has a near black appearance with a wispy head. Aromas of sweet malt, char, roast, booze. Too sweet and lacking bourbon character. I got excited when I read this was partially aged in Pappy van Winkle barrels, but this didn’t translate to the flavor. Thin body and a bit cloying. This one missed the mark for me.

4 ounces on draft at ChurchKey during the SAVOR Surly event, probably left over from the previous night’s event. Pours black with tan head, good lacing. Aromas of mint, herbs, vanilla, light chocolate. Tasting notes of bourbon, mint, herbs, floral notes, chocolate. Medium body with a semi-dry finish. Draft at Appalachian vintner. Pours black with an inch of khaki foam. Nice roasted malt and oak notes on the nose. Fairly big Bourbon note on the tongue that gets more prominent and bold as it warms. Finish lingers a bit. Listed at 7% but feels bigger. Nice!

On tap at the ISIS in Asheville. Pours oily black with a retentive frothy tan head that leaves thick lacing. The nose has roasts and chocolates. A big wallop of bourbon accompanies choco-roasted notes, a hint of smoke and dark malts. The finish comes back to a bourbon close. Full bodied and silky to the palate, it's rich and yummy.

Comes out of the tap a luscious opaque sable with a good tan head. Aroma has an overtone of bourbon - no surprise there - but this does not drown out the roast malt, coffee and molasses notes. Flavor has bourbon, roast malt, nutty, coffee and chocolate notes. Texture is a it thin for a stout, but has good fizz and leaves a smoky malt and molasses finish. Definitely worthy. Pint at Tyler’s Apex. Good aroma, sweet. Barrel and chocolate. Dark orange brown color. Ok head and lace. Sweet bitter flavor. Medium body, smooth creamy, bittersweet finish. Good ba beer.
