On draft at Pangea Tavern in Avon NC. Pours a clear cola brown with an ecru head. Grassy nose. Flavors of citrus and toasted grain. Bitter roast finish.

Solid but unremarkable black IPA. Malty and toasty with mild piney notes. Drinkable, fine.

Meh. It’s fine. Aroma is some faint hops and not as much toasty malt goodness as you’d expect. Taste is much lighter than I thought with a strong bitter finish. The sting of the hops is there but the dark malt seems to be more color than flavor. It’s fine just not that memorable.

12 oz bottle courtesy of a friend, thanks Mike! Black with beige head. Aromas of light roasty notes, light floral and pine. Tastes of roasty notes, floral, bitter chocolate. Medium body with a dry finish.

Bottle. Been in the fridge for about two months. Very dark with oatmeal head. Getting an unfortunate amount of perfume on the nose. Flavor is perfumey, too. Dang, another unfresh one. Stupid bottle shops.

Bottle. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Lots of roasted malt notes on the tongue. It tastes kind of like tar which is both interesting and extremely off-putting. It’s not my favorite style to be honest so this feels kind of like a best-case scenario for it.

Tar, pine, and soil nose, the former is dominant. Cola black, medium tan head, good lacing. Tobacco, pine, tar. Medium body, easy carbonation. Undoubtedly an IDA, but I like a sharper hop bite.

Taps rich coffee sable with a thick and fine-bubbled tan head. Woody hops and hay dominate the aroma, but gladly share the olfactory stage with roast malt and a whisper of wheat. Flavor delivers woody hops, roast malt, coffee, molasses, and subtle earthy and wheaty tones. Firm body has good strong fizz and leaves a hoppy and roasty/charred finish. Get bitten!

12 oz. bottle from Trader Joe’s, Raleigh. Dark brown pour with a frothy khaki head. Aroma of fresh pine, tangerine, and faint chocolate. Taste features expected citrus and piney hop bitterness with chocolate and coffee malts to balance. This is a very nicely done black IPA.

On tap at Finnegan’s as I wore my kickass holiday suit for the trivia season finale. Moderately thin black pour, fine khaki lacing. Aroma is primarily herbal and pine with mild roast notes. Flavor is IPA foremost. In control pine/spruce hop sting with mild roast in the background. The Black in Black IPA is a secondary character here, which I like. Very clean, crisp, and drinkable.
