Black pour, faint beige head. Aroma is chocolate, straight hersheys. Flavor is dry, chocolate, some espresso. Hoppy aftertaste, citrus hops, creamy yet bitter. Bittersweet chocolate, some caramel and a bit more coffee. Dry mouthfeel, bitter coffee, hoppy and a little chalky aftertaste. Its good but Im glad I didnt buy into the hype, nothing seperates this from other imperial stouts.

Many thanks to Stine for sharing this one. Black color with no head. Aroma of vanilla and a bit of oak. Bitter chocolate, roasted barley and a little coffee. Some piney hops. Creamy mouthfeel. Good and so easy to drink, but nothing incredibly outstanding.

Thanks Eben! This was great. Dark, rich, thick brown pour with a tan head. With roasted malt and sweet chocolate. The flavor is amazing. Smooth mouth feel. Sweet chocolate, some citrus hops, and dark fruit.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle 370/500, with thanks to Pete. Velvety black pour skinned with tanned marshmallow yellow. Aroma is distinctly bright with sweetness of dark toffee and molasses; underneath, prune and red licorice glazed in quiet milk chocolate. Slightly watery and very understated. Flavor is mildly medicinal, but not alcoholic, defined by black cherries, citrus, cocoa, heather honey and candy sugar. Very light hearted sweetness in general, showing a soft, careful chocolate presence throughout; purportedly massive hop contributions shine through only with the juicy fruit acids that slowly and consistently soak into the thick foundation of malt, and recall the bright tones of deep roasted latin american coffees in that exchange. Palate is slightly watery, but reasonably syrupy, and very smooth. Finishes with dried out chocolate, some hazelnut and the plastic texture of raw, bottom shelf espresso. Far from being compelling or especially memorable, this is still pretty flawless and very easy to drink.

Bomber, #352/500, with thanks to both shp555 and ucusty for a bottle! Pours a dark brown/black with a thick and creamy dark tan head, great lacing. Aroma is full of espresso, semi-sweet chocolate, cocoa, molasses, and slight vanilla and dark fruit. Flavor brings in more espresso, chocolate/cocoa, dark fruits and a nice hoppy bitterness. Well crafted, but seems to struggle to really stand out if compared to other top notch Imperial Stouts.

Poured black with red hues around the edges. Head was a dark beige color, but didnt last too long. Chocolate-y aroma, some ash and strong roast, perhaps some lactose, and some alcohol came out as it warmed. Taste started out with the strong dark roast, similar to The Abyss, but where the Abyss powers on with ash, this transforms elegantly into dark chocolate and sweet lactose flavors. Smooth is a good word to describe it. Carbonation was on the lower side and body was medium bodied. If I can be picky, Id give the taste a little above an 8, but not quite a 9, so Ill add in an extra point to the overall. Big thanks to Cole and his roommate for the sample!

UPDATED: MAY 6, 2009 Wow, fantastic beer...
Pours a rich dark black color, letting no light through the snifter, and holds a nice sized brown head. Good lacing. Smell at first is of dark rich fruit, and then shifts in a dark chocolately, roasty and dry coccoa smell that is really nice. Taste is rich, creamy, smooth mild bittersweet chocolately sweetness. Nice and dark and dry in the finish for a great balance. Never got too chocolately, artificial, or cloying in the least. The drinkability is phenomenal. Medium to light carbonation and a great mouthfeel. The alcohol is flawlessly hidden as well. Easily one of my favorite beers, and exactly what I want in a Chocolate beer. Worlds better than ST Choklat and the Chocolate Donut Beer. Shared with pint size for Valentines but easily couldve had the entire bomber to myself with no complaints...

Growler at a tasting thanks to Cole. Poured black (surprised?) with a nice sized tan head. Strong chocolate aroma up front with some coffee and some dark fruits. Flavor is similar, just more of it. The chocolate was not overdone, and just adds to the complexity of everything. Finishes creamy with little carbonation. Hid the alcohol very well. This was surprisingly good and I really am glad I got to sit down and enjoy a few glasses of this.
