3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at Forest & Main yesterday afternoon.
Pours near black with a small beige head. A bit of lacing on the glass. The nose carries some initial dry roasted malts along with chocolate undertones. Some milk chocolate, but more toward dark chocolate. Behind that, a bit of light cherry-driven fruit character and mild earthiness.
Flavor starts off with chocolate and roast character, then falling into a pleasing earthiness and mild acidity. A bit of cherry and faint dark fruits. Body is light-medium with good carbonation. Wild yeast has done really nice things to the finish.
Quite drinkable and a really nice dark wild beer. The base beer is not lost at all, yet the wild yeast is really able to shine through. Very nice.
Growler from brewpub. Pours turbid blackish with khaki head. Nose is tart lactic yeasty fruit, cherry, roasty patent malt, dark chocolate. Tastes tart, with notes of yeasty funky lactose, black cherry, roasty dark malt, and a smooth finish. This one will cause purists to be flummoxed, but is a great beer in its own right. Draft at Forest and Main. Pours a pitch black with a very thing mocha head. Aroma is very reminiscent of the regular Anne. Slightly roast, light cocoa. Taste has a tinge of wild farmhouse character, but isn’t enough to put this on a sour category. A fair bit more rustic and nuanced than the regular Anne. callmemickey (4549) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 20, 2013
Dark black brown body, medium sized tan head, soapy lacing. Chocolate, dark fruits, a little dry roast malt. Flavor shows more roast and less chocolate, still some dark fruits and a light tannic acidity. Medium bodied, moderate acidity, light acidity in the finish complimenting a tight dry roasty bitterness. Not tremendously different than Queen Anne but it shows some wild yeast character.
