At Forest & Main last weekend. Somewhat dark. The nose has some caramel and bread plus faint roast. Flavor is a bit sweet with some caramel. Note quite as caramelized or integrated as some of the better scotch ales, but a good beer.
On tap at F&M. Poured reddish with thick dense off-white head. Big malty nose. As described, this is all about the malt so I was warned. I like a maltier brew and this is huge on the malt profile. Alcohol is present. Reminded me of a old-school English barley wine but with minimal balance from hops, it’s too far to the malt side. Dark black body, thin tan head, spotty lacing left befind. Nose shows light peaty malts, baker’s chocolate and some roast--all in a rather delicate balance. Flavor shows more dynamics and intensity with increasing caramel presence. Medium to full bodied, gentle but appropriate carbonation, lightly earthy finish is nice. A decent beer, but not my favorite of styles.
