DATE: November 25, 2017... OCCASION: Christmas tree in place, the season's preparations have begun... and a Thanksgiving beer showdown with Cigar City's Maduro... GLASSWARE: Abita pint... pours a velvet-black body with a finger's worth of brown head that rings out to a reasonable thickness... first scent is definite rauch, with its signature beefy bacon, though a plasticine waft detracts from its overall experience.... slick, slightly oily palate with a buzz at the throat...flat cola, perhaps... a lingering, roasted smokiness mingles with an islay-style band-aid to produce a sweet, cloying porter that pales to its challenger today... altogether, an uneven offering that doesn't deliver the tobacco or coffee as promised... a miss that can be tolerated.... mansquito (6971) - Nueva York, New York, USA - OCT 19, 2017
At the source: pours near black with a beige head. Aroma is plenty of tobacco and smoke. Taste is a sharp smokiness. Pretty malty. Unique smoky character. Pretty nice. jgb9348 (6515) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - AUG 8, 2017
Deep dark brown coloured body with a relatively thick rich brown head, that shows about 80% opacity in the body. Aroma of strong smoked meat, liquid smoke, mushrooms, roasted malt, a hint of coffee and more, artificial smoked notes without much depth. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted notes with coconut and toffee by far the strongest up front with a big dose of bitterness from coffee, all finished up by some smoke flavours that border on mushrooms, bacon and liquid smoke. Aftertaste has a hint of depth from the malt, but still some relatively unconvincing thin bodied notes of cardboard, toast, grain and liquid smoke with mushrooms and coffee also around. Overall, an interesting beer that just rubs me the wrong way with a thin body, not much malt around, yet a big smoke flavour - tastes on the liquid smoke/fake side of things without much complexity, as well. Worth passing up, or trying to see if this is all a bad rating and the beer IS actually really good!?! I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 26-November-2016 for US$1,69 sampled at home in Washington on 06-August-2017. The appearance was a black color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that slid off at a decent pace. Not much lace.
The aroma had some sweet meaty smoky tones over top of some ash and earthy to grassy hops. Light coffee. Touch of vanilla.
The flavor leaned into the sweet meaty smokiness. Followed through in the aftertaste and on into the finish.
The palate was between light and medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt good.
Overall, pretty good smoked beer I could give another shot if offered.
On tap at the source. Poured a black color with a small sized tan head. Roast, smoke, coffee, chocolate, and a lighter meatiness. hiphops (324) - caldwell, New Jersey, USA - MAR 18, 2017

tastes a little sweet a little bitter a little smoky a little sharp
feels nice and thin small lazy bubbles.
their only good beer
Thanks for the can JayBo. Could have scored higher but it wasn’t smoky enough for me. Otherwise, a nice, solid porter. Plenty of coffee and chocolate notes, maybe some resin. Very easy to drink. Nice and smooth. demannu (451) - New Jersey, USA - OCT 30, 2016
Picked up a can in a craft your own 6pack. Rather typical aroma and appearance for a porter. Opens with a flavor of a light coffee and chocolate. Smokey character really comes out in the finish. A bit thin but very drinkable. Beerdedone (3460) - Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 17, 2016
Can. Pours black with a creamy dense tan head. Aroma of smoke, chocolate and coffee. Flavor of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, smoke and peat.
