Pours a cloudy orange-amber with a frothy, white head that dissipates rather quickly, leaving a trace of lacing. Aroma is of instant coffee, sweet orange, and honey. Taste is predominately sweet and sour, with coffee taking the lead, followed by a mild floral hoppiness (emphasis on mild). Tastes in general are restrained, however. Mouthfeel is watery, with some light carbonation. In sum: A neat experiment, but a so-so beer. Because of the amber ale style, I might have expected the coffee to stand out more here. But it didn’t do that at all. There was just a certain tepidness to the aroma and taste that didn’t do it for me.

Lighter carbonation. Kind of a caramely malt flavor. Good bigger coffee in the nose. Sweeter taste overall. Light spicy bitter bite, from the coffee grinds, I presume. Kind of a light chile-pepper sort of thing in the taste. I dig the coffee aroma, though. Coffee-amber, I dig the esoteric, niche flavor / style combos. Annie really dug the coffee aroma. Bomber - pours amber with faintly orange head. Nose is grapefruit and coffee. Flavor adds brown sugar or something like it. Sweet and bitter but not too much. Interesting and refreshing. UPDATED: MAY 30, 2015 August 21st, 2013 - Fort Collins is looking to draw in the bourgeoning coffee snob crowd with their Common Ground. And the name is apt. Chances are that beer connoisseurs are also picky about their morning liquid and pick-me-up. And like a common ground, a brew brewed with coffee beans fills in that sliver of the Venn Diagram connecting coffee and beer appreciation. The aroma is hoppy and, strangely, peppery. I expected a coffee stout, but this is a lighter shade of brew, bringing new and innovative flavors to my beer resume. It’s a semi-sweet flavor like the Japanese coffee roasts I’m used to, and then then flavor completely evaporates, only to return as a warm, glowing and translucent version of itself in the aftertaste. It’s more like a red ale blended with coffee, and while I’m not so sure that the flavors are harmonizing, it’s different and little crazy, which I do love. (3.0
December 22nd, 2011 - Mornings are for hot coffee, but evenings are open for menu planning. If I’m craving the coffee bean well after the sun has set, something like a coffee beer can hit the spot, though they are few and far between. Fort Collins’ Common Ground is firmly in this class of brews that take on the mantle of a cup of joe, while still being able to distinguish the shape of the beer underneath. A bit surprising for a coffee beer, the color is almost a light amber in color, and gives off a smell that isn’t exactly what I expected from brewed beans. Rather, it’s the smell of raw, still verdant and red coffee beans, and the smell of tomato leaves and vines - vegetal but unappealing. The flavor performs better, offering a nice, smooth, heavy and dense palate, and flavors of the kinds of sophisticated coffees served at world class coffee shops, or brewed in Clover machines. Acidic, and even a bit tangy, this beer delivers top-notch coffee flavors, so beware drinkers of dreck: this may not be for you if you think Pikes roast is the apogee of the craft of brewing coffee beans. 22 oz. bottle from a trade with a buddy on BA. Want to guess the color? Nose is light coffee bean. Flavor is lightly sweet. Taste is old coffee grounds, Earthy hops and caramel syrup. Lighter notes of toffee and light bread malt. It reminds me of a caramel iced coffee. Carbonation gives this light creamy texture. I thought this was unusual when I read the description and it is. And that’s what I really like about it. If you like coffee brews give this a try. Amber pour not much head. Aroma of toast and fruit, no coffee evident. Bitter and acidic in an offputting way. It leans towards interesting at times but is just not cohesive.

22oz bottle in a lager glass. Pours amber with a lacy, cream-colored head. Aroma of coffee, caramel and pale malts, and floral hops. The coffee would be really good with a stout, but doesn’t go as well with the amber ale malt/hop character. Average texture. Not the best beer, but my bottle was a little old. 4.0 A: Wow, I’m shocked at how light this is given that coffee is involved. Clear orange amber color. Two fingers of foamy beige head. Retention is good given that coffee is involved and a short ring of lacing is left.
3.5 S: Smells somewhat like a really weak cup of coffee. Big toastiness and grainy malts from the base beer. Actually, this smells like a coffee filtered full of coffee after the coffee has been brewed. It’s not a great aroma, but for some reason I like it anyway.
3.5 T: Tastes like it smells. Big toastiness and graininess. Weak used coffee filter. ’Nuff said.
4.0 M: Lighter medium body. Good active carbonation. Reasonable creaminess. Light and crisp.
3.5 D: Not an impressive brew by any means, but super easy to drink and different than every other coffee beer I’ve ever had.

Pours amber with small head. Lots of coffee and chocolate and a touch of nuttyness. Brown ale sweet with a very slight coffee bitterness. Not bad, but nothing spectacular.
