This is great, great beer. It’s close to perfection. If you like smoked beers as I do then you will love this. The 10.2% ABV is not noticed at all in the flavor. Well done! robertburns (15) - westminster, Colorado, USA - JAN 10, 2006
medium brown in color. almost no head. very light smoke in the nose. rich, creamy mouthfeel. slightly sweet with very nice, smooth smoke flavor. this is the best beer I’ve had from Fort Collins Brewery! WELL DONE!!! Cletus (6355) - Connecticut, USA - AUG 31, 2006
Pours red with a nice creamy head. Smells smoky with some nice underlying fruittiness. Taste is of caramel, smoke, dark fruits and doughy yeast. The smokiness really adds an additional layer of enjoyment to what would have been a great beer on its own. nearbeer (5518) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - DEC 23, 2008
UPDATED: FEB 20, 2009 650 ml shared by Butters at Christmas Eve^3. Clear darkish brown with a creamy ring of foam that lasts and spots some soapy lace. Aroma is molasses and light smoked meat. Flavor is a nice blend of hickory smoked ham, chocolate and molasses. Medium-heavy body is smooth and well-dried by the smoke. Kevin (2200) - Montana, USA - OCT 6, 2005
lets see, i had this at the brewery, at the gabf, and at my home from a bottle. i guess i should enter my notes. wow, let me talk about the appearance of this sucker. a rich ruby pour with a dark soul and an off white head. simply beaiutiful. nice smokey meat aroma with some worcsertishire(sp?) noce is intriguing, i wish i could put it into better words but smoked bologna is what comes to mind, and i mean that in a good way damnit. my white trash side always hamstrings me. sharp smoked cheddar taste with a sweetness of well, more smoke. i would never have guessed the abv of this. the alcohol is nicely subdued. mouthfeel is creamier from the bottle than on tap, but the tap flavors really release more smokey sweet meat. but either is a pleasure. keep on brewing them Sandy and i’ll keep trying to find ways to get them.

Thanks to HopGod for this one, which was stellar. First of all, I am astounded that this one was 10.2% ABV. Amazing. Perhaps the best hidden alcohol ever. I also love rauch beers, so perhaps I am a bit biased. At any rate, the pour was deep ruby with 2-finger khaki head. Aroma of big, smoky caramel malt, slight dark fruit, and some briwn sugar. The taste is very smoky, with a firm caramel malt bill, plus some port wine, scotch, and frankfurters. Rich, smoky, decadent palate, with a complex, smooth finish. This one is exceptional. UPDATED: JUN 10, 2009 So, is it one of the best dopplebocks I’ve had in ages? Before I tell you that, we need to go over a few things.
Appearance: Pours a dark brown body with ruby hues around the edge and a khaki-colored head.
Smell: A malty caramel aroma with a delicate, yet meaty, smokiness pervades the nose. Also, there’s some light, fruity notes hidden just beneath the smokescreen.
Taste: A healthy dose of caramel malt starts the flavor crisscrossed by the earnest, ever-present smokiness. The dark fruitiness is more expressive in the flavor, showing up as plums and raisins. Hints of brown sugar and chocolate, too. Gorgeous. That’s a gorgeous taste they’ve got there.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Gentle carbonation and a reasonably creamy mouthfeel.
Drinkability: A supremely enjoyable, well-balanced beer. I really wish I could get a six-pack, listen to some Pinback, and get my picture taken with the bottle. malrubius (2958) - Springfield, Vermont, USA - MAR 29, 2010
22 ounce bottle in Sam Adams glass. Dark amber/brown with flat tan head and lace. Mildly smokey caramel toffee woody bready aroma Smoky caramel sweetness with mild dark fruit smoky woody mildly bitter woody smoky sweet finish. Nice and rich. The smoke in the finish makes this one really nice. Almost no alcohol presence at 10.2% One helluva good beer. rollinsr (799) - Atlanta, GEORGIA - FEB 14, 2012
This beer is awesome. Pours a nice ruby/amber color with a bit of tan head. Aroma is sweet and rich dark fruit flavors (fig and prune mainly) with some caramel as well. Flavor is sweet and slightly smoky. There is also a sort of oaky and nutty flavor that underlies some of the sweet fruit flavors. Sits very well on the palate with some lingering caramel nuttiness that imparts a slightly sticky feel. mkobes (2142) - paramus, New Jersey, USA - MAY 31, 2006
