The aroma and flavor have roasted malts, dark chocolate, some earthy bitterness resiny hops, dark fruit, raisins, good bitterness, nice mix of malts and hops. Better than I expected. August 8th, 2013 - The Incredible Hop series continues with Fort Collins’ Imperial Black IPA, one of a style which is appearing with more and more frequency these days. The black body gives off a heavily spiced smell with black licorice, juniper and clove, with a touch of char as well, wreathed in black pepper, and topped with a nice hit of Jamaican jerk spice. The palate is smooth and silky, but perks up a little at the end with a last burst of bubbles, to deliver an extra dose of spiced flavors. The flavor here reminds me of Jamaican blackened fish, with all the spicy elements present, and a huge kick in the aftertaste, paired with an equally spicy hops. Pours a deep black from the bottle with fluffy tan head that leaves good lace. Aroma is big on the malt with hint of black smoke and roast, lingering vegetal pine. Taste is malt and booze forward, hops have definitely fallen off and oxidized. Would like it fresh I’m sure.

I don’t get a chance to rate a lot of Fort Collins beers, but those that I have I’ve mostly enjoyed, so this beer continues that trend. Aroma has is nearly stout like with so much roastd malts. There is some piney hops struggling to get out, but it’s an unbalanced mix of the two...clearly malt forward. A subtle touch of smoke (I think) seems to escape now and again, which was nice. Flavor is straight-up bitter, bitter, and more bitter. Like drinking an espresso with hops floating in it. Very dry, very puckering. Not sure how this can be an Imperial IPA, when it tastes like an Imperial stout without the mouthfeel. Alcohol is noticeable. ClassyBeagle (376) - New Jersey, USA - OCT 30, 2013

Clear, black with a small frothy brown head and excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted sweet malt and hop with a small alcohol aroma. Medium body with a dry oily texture and soft carbonation. Bottle from BevMo: The liquid poured a jet black color and was topped with a firm layer of head that left behind trails of lace. In the aroma, an instant whiff of hops dominates the nose and suggests citrus fruits. The flavor is intensely bitter with a huge bite of ripe green hops that clearly counterbalance the usage of roast black malt. Definitely one of the better black IPA’s I’ve had, and not to shabby for being the first beer recipe sampled by Fort Collins.
