Large tan head, good retention and lace. Mostly black in color but a touch of ruby edging. Piney, woodsy nose, faint citrus and a hint of alkyhol. Med/full body, chewy and a bit oily, resiny. Hops dominate, pine and citrus focused, grapefruity and leafy with buried caramel malts and roast. A big azz brew that gets bigger as it warms. Finish is long, roasty and bitter. I,m buzzed! Props to stumpyiliz for the bomber! freeofthoughts (688) - Raytown, Missouri, USA - OCT 7, 2012
Pours blackish with off white head. The aroma is nice and sweet with the hops and grain being bright and floral with obvious roasted qualities. The taste is moderately roasted with some light fruity yeasty elements working with a very fruity hop back. There is a nice burnt caramelized sugary grain and the alc is not to much. Very appealing overall, well done for a stronger brew by style. BMMillsy (1788) - Florida, USA - OCT 6, 2012
UPDATED: OCT 21, 2012 An excellent black IPA. Has all of the characteristics of an IPA, but pours black. Not much black ale character, but very heavy hops here. Pretty good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone unclemattie (4358) - Georgia, USA - SEP 23, 2012
22oz bottle. Black pour. Light brown foam. Aroma is very chocolatey. Large amounts of chocolate in the nose alongside some pine hops. Tastes like a heavy hopped chocolate beer. Very nice chocolate malt, resiny hops, mellow pine. Creamy textured, well balanced, ABV well hidden. Better than the Belgian-style IPA; Excited to try some others.

opaque black. Thin off white head, kind of soapy. Chocolate malt, piney hops. Taste is a lot of bitter pine all in my mouth. Body and texture is thin. My first glass was better than the second. Slightly below average.

Pours a reddish dark brown into stem glass. Smells and tastes of hops (onion), hops (citrus) and hops (tree bark) with slight molasses, and malt. Decent chewy booze-bomb. AdamChandler (5051) - Enfield, New Hampshire, USA - SEP 21, 2012
Thanks Chris! Enjoying in a wine glass. Deep brown amber...pretty hazy. 1 finger head fades fast.
Very piney scent. Very chewy taste! Super chewy, petty and hints of oak and brown sugar. Medium body. Incredibly bitter! Too malty, too chewy, too bitter. Lacks balance. Sorry guys. jnkor (364) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - SEP 8, 2012
Sadly there was almost no aroma, or a better score. Nice dark brown, nice look to it. Small lacing head, caramel. Taste is very sweet, but palate is smooth and light, and kind of watery. A fun mix, but not obeying styles. kevinator (2205) - The Colony, Texas, USA - SEP 8, 2012
Really good stuff. The aroma smelled like molasses and soy sauce, which was a little off setting. It poured very dark with no light coming through and virtually no head. A well balanced mix of roasted dark malts and a big hop presence. This actually aged fairly well. The palate reminded me of the consistency of low-fat milk. Good job FCB. Very delicious impy black IPA. Has all the classic moves -- dark chocolate, soft roast, pine and citrus. And it also has a subtle smoky quality that gives it even more depth. Wonderful blend of flavors and aromas. And wonderful balance, with boldness and finesse. Loved it.
