4/07/2011: Fort Collins Wheat Wine Ale... Aroma: Sweet malty goodless with a tinge of alcohol and cheese. Appearance: Deap red-orange color; ivory crown. Flavor: Caramel, but not too sweet; subtle citrus hops; some alcohol; ripe fruits and vanilla. Palate: Medium-full body; big and almost chewy; sticky. Overall: Yep, definitely "Ravenous yeast yields a warming brew ripe with caramel-like flavor and fruity esters."

Bottle. Pours a rather hazy dark amber color with a smallish white head on it. Nose is definitely malty with some strong notes to it; very caramel-ish, and almost smells like it should be used in baking. Taste is slightly sweet, but drier alcohol elements on the back end. Interesting...

On tap at Tap ’n Handle. Pour is deep crimson with a frothy off-white head and great lacing. Raisins, fruity esters, brown sugar, caramel, dark fruits, and yeast in the aroma. Taste is figs, raisins, red licorice, caramel, brown sugar, grass, and plums ending lightly bitter. Medium a mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Not bad, but a touch unbalanced. Summer 2011 - Here’s the pinnacle of the tasters we enjoyed at Fort Collins Brewery, the not-so-much heralded Wheat Wine. I can’t figure out why this doesn’t get more love from the existing reviews, but it is unfairly neglected. Featuring a sweet aroma, rich with caramel and fresh cut apples and bubble gum, it’s hard for me to understand that this was born from the same womb as some of the other tasters which were…less prone to being given affection (to put it needlessly exceedingly politely.) This features a lot of those sweet flavors I’ve come to adore in barley wines, without being overtly dark about it. The flavors are there, and boozy, but lighter. Intense, dripping notes of honey, brown sugar, honey cakes, light maple syrup and even lighter, very unique pine notes are blended with a an aggressive, lisping alcohol flavor to produce a fantastically new and novel flavor. This is what I was looking for when I drove all the way to Ft. Collins, and it only took half a flight of tasters for me to find it at Ft. Pours orange with a small head. Aroma is weirdly nutty with a strong note of dry dog food. Sweet malt, earthy, lots of alcohol, tends towards cloying.
