COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
India pale ales were designed to withstand the long voyage to India. Today, it seems one has to design the IPA strong and hoppy enough to make the trip back as well. Vortex IPA is the Fort Georges first foray into this strong beer category. Our IPA is made with generous additions of cascade, Simcoe and Palisade hops throughout the brewing, fermentation and conditioning phases, balanced with heaps of organic pale malt. We designed this to not rip your taste buds off your tongue, but rather vigorously stimulate them and your palate into a lupulin-ecstacy of pleasure. During the cross-country truck trip our brewery made to find its home in Astoria, it was nearly scattered to the cornfields of Nebraska by a tornado. We try to capture some of natures intensity in every pint. IBU 97

Bottle. The pour was a murky medium burnt orange with an average (1-2 finger) off white frothy head that lasted a little while, reducing to a few small puddles with a medium collar and had fair spotty lacing. The aroma was of a toasted grain malt, pine and citrus hops and an earthy yeast with notes of caramel and citrus (orange and grapefruit). The taste was mildly sweet with a hint of caramel throughout and then had a hoppy grapefruit peel bitterness with a mild orange sweetness towards the end. The flavor lasted an average time after the swallow with a mildly harsh piney bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel was between light and medium in body and dry in texture with a nice lively carbonation. Overall this was a bitter-sweet IPA with an awesome drinkability, which ultimately leaves you wanting more...

Had the beer during the 2016 Kompaan Bloedbroeder festival. The beer looks delicious. It has some typical IPA looks. The color is a light orangy yellow, with a nice cloudiness. On top of the beer a nice little layer of white foam is formed. The bulk collapses quickly, leaving a thin drape. The smell is amazing. It reminds me of Dublin and the Irish IPAs Ive had there. Amazing smell. I smell lovely sweet and lightly sour aromas of citrus fruits, including grapefruit and lemon zest, and a nice hint of passionfruit. I immediately feel like Im in Ireland again, because most Irish pale ales have the same fruity hop characters. The hops are lovely, very aromatic and rich and well balanced. They are full of smell, but gentle. The taste is the same. Irish pale ale all over. There is hoppy grapefruit, passion fruit and other citrus fruits. Also some lovely bitter touches of hops and some ginger. Perfect balance. The palate is fine. Nice and smooth. All in all, a very good IPA. Good job. I love it.

Super hazy IPA. A bit of a funky nose and flavor. Not real smooth. Wanted more from St George.

Draught @ Van Moll Brewpub. Clear orange to light amber color, medium sized white to off-white head that lasts for quite a while. Aroma and flavor both have malts, hops, sort of fruity but not the fruitiness I prefer, it reminds me of orange, orangepeel and apricot. Possibly brett as well. Meh.

Can from Safeway in Astoria. Aroma is pine and citrus. 2" head when poured into a shaker pint. Color was golden straw and very hazy. Taste is very bitter hop flavored with a dry bitter end. Overall a good west coast IPA that I always manage to pick up when Im in the Portland area.

Poured from can. Aromas of grapefruit and spruce. Flavors follow roughly the same suit, with a little bit of funk. Caramel maltiness comes through. The bitterness is manageable.

Slightly hazy deep copper with a foamy large ivory head. Big earthy and stinky nose thats slightly toffee-ish and lupulin-y, but with that greasy earthy hop oil tone. Crisp and smooth flavor thats got some toffee and toast like an English IPA, with a touch of earthy grassy and rye-like bitterness. Dry crisp leafy hop finish. Not shabby but not a standout.
