Made to Celebrate Founders 15th Anniversary, Bolt Cutter Barley Wine is an American barley wine that pours deep copper color and is strong, sweet and malt-forward, with a spicy complexity. Typical of the style, it is very cellarable. The final product is a blend using beer that was aged in Bourbon barrels, some from aged maple syrup Bourbon barrels and some from standard fermentation. After blending, the beer was allowed to mature in bottles and kegs for a few months before releasing.

Bottle drank June ’12. Pours a deep ruby orange with fleeting red tinged head and slight lace. The aroma is very rich well rounded fruity and spicy hops, a little bourbon vanilla, lots of caramel, and booze. The flavor is very sweet, moderate bourbon booze, ripe orange, woody and strong hop bitterness. The feel is thick, lively, sticky, but gritty, woody, and warming. It’s surprisingly not too much of a hot mess. Highly drinkable for being so young and so big. You wouldn’t guess 15%. It doesn’t have the dimension of a highly complex barley wine however.

Malty and strong. Bourbon tinged and requires sipping. Very enjoyable. Wish I had more than the one bottle. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I’d be curious to know how this ages. There is fairly heavy fruit and pine coming from the hops, but I imagine they don’t keep very long and they were the real unique parts of this beer. Tried at the 2013 summer beer tasting.

Pours copper with a small foamy head. Smells of citrus, pine and fruits. Tastes hoppy up front. Lemon and oranges. Sweet boozy taste.. Surprisingly easy to drink at 18 percent.

Bottle thanks to a trade! Pours a clear amber with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a combination of sweet grains, toffee, bourbon and a touch of maple. Flavor has a lot of toffee and bourbon with a touch of sweet grain and maple.

Mouthfeel is round, soft, tiny astringent and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with caramel, biscuits, grapefruit rinds, dried dark fruits, pine needles and resinous wood.

Tasting courtesy of dschiller. Pours a lovely dark amber with zero head. Aromas are massive hops, bourbon and just a dash of vanilla and caramel. Flavors are hops, then heat, then barrel notes and the finish is bitter hops mixed with just a touch of vanilla. Palate is perfect, heavy and clinging to the tongue. Overall, this is one of the better BA American Barley wines I have tasted.

From tap. Pours hazy orange with a small tan head. Aroma is dry pine and light grapefruity. Bitter and roasted malty. Sweet and bitter pine hoppy. Ends dry and bitter.
