Made to Celebrate Founders 15th Anniversary, Bolt Cutter Barley Wine is an American barley wine that pours deep copper color and is strong, sweet and malt-forward, with a spicy complexity. Typical of the style, it is very cellarable. The final product is a blend using beer that was aged in Bourbon barrels, some from aged maple syrup Bourbon barrels and some from standard fermentation. After blending, the beer was allowed to mature in bottles and kegs for a few months before releasing.

750ml bottle. Pours a clear, dark amber color with a thin tan head and some lacing. Aroma is caramel, nutty, oak, vanilla. Heavy and syrupy on the palate with soft, creamy carbonation. Flavor is very sweet, malty, caramel, toast, some booze, oak, vanilla, clove?, with a sweet, oaky finish. Not my favorite from Founders.

750 ml bottle, vintage 2012. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a garnet red/copper color with about a half inch light tan head. Head retention is good, and theres a lot of lacing left behind. The brew smells like dark fruit, caramel, vanilla, candied oranges, sweet spices, citrusy hops, wood, and some booze/bourbon. It tastes similar to the aroma, like dark fruit (cherries, raisins), sweet spices, caramel, vanilla, candied oranges, toffee, wood, bourbon/booze, citrusy hops, molasses and some light pine resin. Its mostly sweet tasting, but theres noticeable bitterness too. Mouthfeel/body is full, its syrupy and coating with low/moderate carbonation. Its not as boozy as I expected for being 15% ABV. I thought this was a pretty good brew, hopefully Founders will make this again in the future.

Bottle to glass. Pours a beautiful deep amber light mahogany color with an off-white head. Aroma is full of complex malts, sweet, and alcoholic. Flavor is sweet, heavy, malty, caramel, alcohol. Thick and oily. Lingering alcoholic malty sweetness. Fantastic.

Barcade, Brooklyn tap ($8): Pours murky brown with a beige head. Aroma is a lot of hops, loads of maltiness, whiskey, wood, and a hell of a lot of sugar. Taste is slightly boozy (not nearly as much as some other reviewers are claiming). It is also rather hoppy and bitter. Plenty of malt backbone to wash it down. This is an extremely aggressive beer. Not for the faint of heart. A good way to start my Founders tap takeover.

Alright, lets see whats going on here. Pours a fiery orange with loose soapy light tan foam scattered over a brilliantly clarified beer. Cherry, alcohol, burning alcohol, sugar, light crystal malts, some pithy hops. Not an impressive nose whatsoever. Flavor is simply sweet. Booze, malt, sugar, brown sugar, absolutely overly boozy. Medium bodied with low carb and a wet finish that actually makes me feel like I just took a shot of cheap liquor, probably one of the least desirable mouthfeels Ive had in quite some time. I tried, but this became a drainpour for me.

On tap. Murky amber color. Sweet grain flavor with a lemon candy finish. Deceptively strong and very smooth. A complex barley wine for slow sipping.

Lite amber color, tast of tobacco and a lil bit of lite chocolate. Has a little bit of hops to it. A good American barley wine. Just not my particular style.
