this barley wine had a burnt orange-red pour and made a one finger off-white to light tan colored head that receded to thin cover and ring, the glass had a lots of tiny bubbles flowing slowly in the glass, this drink looked viscous, this drink left lots of small spots of lacing on the sides of the glass, the bottle had a thin layer of sediment with a thicker (darker) ring of sediment at the edges of the bottle,
this ale had malty aromas of toasted malt, bready malt, caramel, malt and bread sweetness, fermented fruit that resembled peach and pear fruit with light citrus notes, it had a big bread and malt nose, very little bourbon on the nose,
this drink had flavors of bready and toasted malt, caramel, alcohol, fermented fruit that resembled peach and pear fruit with light citrus notes,
there was a little lemon, the finish had a alcohol pepper bitterness, there may have been a little hop resin bitterness, little to no bourbon noticed but that is better than too much bourbon, the hop and alcohol bitterness did add a touch of balance to the sweetness but this ale is malty and sweet, the alcohol provided a warm touch on the palate,
the mouth feel was medium to thick on the tongue, creamy and had average carbonation,
the nose was mostly bread, malt, some caramel, and alcohol that followed, this was nice,
especially good for a night like right now, it is 10°F or 11°F outside and I have this nice drink to sip.
750 ml bottle shared by Mark - thanks again, Mark! Pours a mostly clear, just slightly hazed tea color with minimal head, just a few off-white bubbles forming around the edge. We did this one blind. It's certainly oxidized, with cardboard, but there's plenty of wood, caramel, some subtle spice, tea, earth, and bourbon. Maple seems to be gone. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a dry, boozy, oxidized mouthfeel. It drinks a bit older than it is, as some of us guessed it was closer to 10 years old than 5, but it's actually not too bad. A very strong barleywine. Somehow it disguises the alcohol . I find storing creates a really smooth beer. I waited several Yeats to have it again and it was really much more rounded in flavor.

Bottle. Pours a clearish amber red with a quickly fading beige bubbly head. Aroma is of red fruits, strawberry, cranberry, raspberry, jam, treacle. Taste is of caramel, treacle, red fruits, forest fruits, slightly bitter, some heat on the finish. Oily mouthfeel, medium carbonation. smith4498 (3687) - Winter Springs, Florida, USA - DEC 4, 2016

2013. Bottle. Aroma is huge. The plate is thick and creamy. The taste is sweet and malty. Carmel and little fruit. Pretty awesome. Mark_Eck (1998) - - AUG 5, 2016
Bottle. Pours a hazy dark reddish color. Aroma and taste are bready malts, caramel, raisins, and some bourbon. jandd1983 (4680) - Wentzville, Missouri, USA - JUL 1, 2016
Bottle hiding in the back of the beer fridge. It poured a dark amber color with a tan head. The aroma was of bready malts, caramel, dark fruits and some bourbon. The taste was similar to the aroma with more caramel, dark fruits, toffee, bready malts, bourbon and some not overwhelming booze. Very tasty. oldrtybastrd (5228) - Fort Walton Beach, Florida, USA - APR 12, 2016
Pours a dark golden brown with fluffy head. Aromas of dark malts, hops, and light bourbon. Flavors of sweet malts, hops, and nice bourbon notes. AirForceHops (8026) - Epping, New Hampshire, USA - MAR 18, 2016
750 ml bottle thanks to Adrien and his deep cellar. Very nice deep ruby color, still normal carbonation. Aroma shows a good amount of pine, light floral hints, dark fruit without any oxidation.
The flavor is still bold. Toffee, pine and floral hops in the center still showing some bitterness. Also shows a light metallic hint after the swallow. Body is full with a very sticky texture. Also still has a lot of warming alcohol. I still like this pretty much although it must be a 6 or 7 oz. sample.
