On tap at Mikes Bar and Grill during Cleveland Beer Week. Huge thanks to Founders for bringing some kegs of this this week. Just awesome. I have been searching for the perfect beer for years. I found it last night. The guy next to me said he had this last week in a bottle and tonight was his first time on tap. He said it was clearly better on tap. I have only had this once. On tap. Last night. So this review is based on what I enjoyed last evening. Pours pitch black with a slight tan ring around the edges. Looks like what I would expect. I put the glass up to my nose and whiff. Whoa. Layers of aromas. First I noticed a stickly sweet maple, then a touch of coffee, roast, and wood made a noticeable note here as well. I smelled this a few times because I was surprised by the complexity just in the aroma. I took a sip. My first thought was "Holy Fuck". An explosion of flavor hit me. Upfront their was a strong sense of coffee, followed very closely by a touch of maple sweetness, then a touch of dark roast from the grain bill and a slight note of vanilla with some booze notes that was not at all hot. The booze flavors were hid well by the way this was barrel aged and melded perfectly in the finished product. There really was no booze as there was just a note of it and it made for a perfectly rounded beer. The finish combined all of the above ever so slightly. There was no cloying sweetness. Nothing over the top. Everything in this beer was perfectly represented from start to finish. I honestly never thought I would give a perfect score to any beer. Until now. This one for me goes beyond the hype and was worth every sip.

KBS is one of my favorites. This One is a version with maple syrup. I hate the maple syrup but ok. Here is tasty!

Draught at Sunset Grill, for an EBF or ACBF event (dont recall which), Winter/Spring 2009. I was actually bartending at the time, and poured myself one sample. Definitely did not need another.
Large, light tan head shows moderate to moderately-strong retention atop a dark cocoa-ebony body of undetermined clarity.
Spicy, peppery phenols from the maple in the nose mix with wood and coconut. Dark, rich caramel and honey notes work against the barrel spiciness/dryness with lingering acidity and a candy-like sugariness from the maple, that isnt unpleasant. Still, its big and boozy though I suppose not any more so than most of its size.
Rich rum raisin, spicy bourbon and coconut are "balanced by caramel and toffee sweetness. Rich, soft, low carbonation and lots of sugar and booze. Not really all that different than KBS, though more acidity and candy-like character from the maple. Lots of roast on the end, as well, with wood, alcohol and spicy bourbon lingering. As with KBS and BS, a fine beer but incredibly overrated/overhyped.

At Hopishop. The legendary CBS, a variation on KBS with bourbon barrel aged maple syrup mixed into the whole, if I am correctly informed. Lacing, moussy, deep tan coloured head over an opaque jet black beer. Powerful, enticing bouquet of indeed maple syrup, warm chocolate sauce, bourbon, candied fig, soy sauce, liquorish, gravy, coffee liqueur, beef stock cubes, bayleaf, treacle. Intense flavor, kicking off with concentrated candied sweetness (date, raisin) with a thick but well-positioned beefy and soy sauce-like umami edge, softish carbo with very thick, syrupy, viscous mouthfeel, thick and deeply caramelly and chocolatey malt body with nutty accents and gentle coffeeish roastedness in the end, assisting the drying effect of woody tannins, peppery hops and heating, liqueurish but elegant alcohol, paired with liquorish- and evidently maple syrup-like spicy sweet notes going down deep into the throat. Needless to say, tasting a beer of this stature, complexity and opulence is a great pleasure, this is at least as good as KBS, though with more obvious sweetness, yet everything remains firmly in balance. An absolute delight and among the best stouts I ever had.

At Hopishop 2016. Aroma of bourbon, sweet syrup, maple and caramel. Taste has sweet thick maple, caramel, milk chocolate, raisin, syrup, bourbon vanilla and some coffee. Deliciously rich beer, glad to have finally tasted this.

Tap at Snallyghaster 2016 showing pitch black with a finger of latte colored foam. The nose shows a maple forward sweetness with bourbon notes of charred wood, smoke, and vanilla. Upon warming up, these notes seem to come together like a Sriracha chili sauce. The palate is medium bodied and smoothly carbonated. Maple forward sweetness is apparent from the beginning with bourbon in the background - vanilla, smoke, and charred wood. The maple combines with the vanilla extremely well to create a minty mouthfeel throughout the beer. Alcoholic spice is completely disguised by this minty mouthfeel. Bourbon smoke and maple syrup are shown in a balanced finish with not bitterness.

750 ml bottle shared with Nightfall. Thank you very much Alex for keeping this beer for me!! Almost black color with beige brown head. Roasted malty aroma, milk and dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, coffee, vanilla, some spicy notes, some fruit notes, light wood. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma but even better. Medium oily body with soft carbonation. Great beer! I could drink the whole bottle alone!!

July 25, 2015. On tap at Mission Dolores, got the last 2 pours. #3000.
Black with a medium sized creamy tan head. Aroma is intense, yet balanced, with fresh ground coffee, maple syrup, toffee, milk chocolate, vanilla, warming bourbon alcohol. , Taste is medium sweet, soft roasted bitterness. Finish is smooth bitter and roasted coffee and dark chocolate, sweet maple syrup, toffee, vanilla and some warming bourbon notes. Full bodied, creamy, sticky texture, soft carbonation.
Glad to finally try this one, been a big want for a long time and getting the two last pours with my girlfriend after a long day in the car was great. Tried it side by side with KBS and CBS was much smoother and more balanced, the maple syrup complemented the coffee in a great way. Amazing!

Sampled on tap at the Knick. Nie bourbon nose with oak and maple. Sweet and vapory. Dark brown-black opaque with thin tan head. Medium-chewy body with medium-light carbonation. Sweet with chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, and maple. Alcohol. A little rough on the woody notes, boozy and overly sweet finish and mildly cloying after.
