Pours a dark brownish red color with thin tan head, strong oak/bourbon aromas, very malty hints of vanilla and dark fruits. Flavor is full of bourbon, almost like I took a dirty bastard and poured some in, a sure sipper.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2012 The Backwoods Bastard has a strong bourbon taste and aroma. Very dark dark red-tinted color. Very nice taste that almost falls too close to bourbon...maybe too much.

Bottle, thanks to mrDeath5493. Pours a murky brown with a small lazy head. Aroma of sweet malts and peat smoked scotch. Tastes slightly astringent but the alcohol is balanced by a hefty body with plenty of sweetness. Finishes with pepper and cinnamon, slightly bitter. Really really tasty.

Bottle. Pours mahogany with a tight off white head that fades to a thin tight ring. Aroma is bourbon and chocolate malt and a hint of vanilla. Taste is more chocolate roasty malt and bourbon with a woodiness and smooth English bitters. Palate is full and slick with a chaulky dry finish. Very nice beer with a great bourbon character.

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2011 On tap at Fries Cafe. Pours deep dark ruby brown with a small khaki head. Nice lacing on the glass with tightly formed small bubbles around the edges. Enormous aroma of bourbon, cherry, and vanilla. Taste is out of this world. Huge bourbon, vanilla, cherry, toasted malt, wood, caramel, and earthy hops. Medium bodied and slightly sweet, with lingering vanilla, peat, and dry hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Simply put, amazing. Drinks like a fine Scotch or Bourbon. Definitely not for everyone. Once again, Founders rules.

This beer is not too carbonated, but it is finely balanced. Some bourbon barrel aged brews taste too much like the bourbon and nothing like beer. Backwoods balances the bourbon with an actual beer behind it. The nose is strongly of bourbon, but the flavor is supported by a heavy caramel and toffee malt. Maybe a touch buttery too?

Pour looks almost like a cognac or whiskey, almost no head. Aroma of wood, vanilla, malt. Very wood driven flavor. Almost reminds me of a gentle bourbon more than a beer. Alcohol well hidden.

Strong taste of bourbon right away although it seems to mellow into a refreshing vanilla beer for me, almost like a strong hard root beer. The scent smells of bourbon but still goes down sweet. This beer taste better the second time around because you just are not expecting such a strong burst of bourbon. Overall great beer.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2013 Tap rating (same week had a one year bottle that was good but not as good as tap, about a 3.8) pours mahogany brown with off white head. Smell is very grainy, like a box of cereal, a residual grain and oaky bourbon sweetness with vanilla follows along with a touch of char. Taste is smooth, big barley wine like scotch ale with a touch of bourbon, the oak is well apparent and vanilla and barrel character is solid but so well done. This has everything you?d want in a barrel aged beer. This is one of my favorites from the malt end of the spectrum or barrel aged.
