I don’t know if they have changed anything from earlier years, but this is working much more beautifully for me now. Gorgeous stewed dates, prunes, caramel, licorice, vanilla, and a beautifully spicy, boozy woody edge in the aroma translate into sumptuously caramely, fruity, vanilla-oaky goodness in the mouth. Sweet malty and fruity flavors are rounded out by the wood, for a slightly acidic, boozy, earthy, spicy, dry finale. Beautiful and much more balanced than I remembered it being.
Original rating (Dec 2011 and Dec 2012): 7/4/8/4/14
It pours a deep, translucent mahogany without much of a head — only a thin bone-colored foam shows up momentarily and quickly dissipates. The aroma is caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, licorice and wood sustained by a strong backbone of ethanol. It’s super boozy, to say the least. Silky mouthfeel with minimal carbonation. The taste is mainly caramel, brown sugar, and malted grain up front, with a dry, earthy, woody scotch aftertaste. It greets the stomach with soothing warmth.
Draft. Pours dark brown black with light beige head and substantial lacing. Vanilla and alcohol on the nose. Vanilla and anise upfront followed by raisin, plum, and warmth my alcohol. climberbob (497) - Virginia, USA - NOV 15, 2017
Bottle into tulip. Dark hazy mahogany w tan head that does not hang around. Heady aroma of vanilla, Creme brûlée and alcohol. Similar taste w hints of bourbon and oaked creaminess. A touch of sweetness but not cloying. A tasty after dinner sipper.

Klar, mörkt röd med lite brunt, tätt ljus brunt orange skum. Doft: Sprit, malt, trä, lite madeira, vanilj, whiskykola, gräddkola, jäst frukt. Smak: Som doft.
Very barrel-aged type flavor, a lot of wood and vanilla, a pretty heavy ale that'd be best in a small qty, creamy, alco presence not over the top for the abv GregMooreNH (114) - Bedford, New Hampshire, USA - NOV 10, 2017
2017 edition, poured from 12 oz bottle. Pours mahogany with thick, dense head that lingers. Amoma is scotch, bourbon and caramel, in that order. Taste is rich caramel and roast which gives way to sweet bourbon. Finish is very warm bourbon. A wonderful scotch ale that is worth waiting for every year.

Pours a dark amber, with a nice cream head. Aroma of wood and whiskey. Taste is rich and malty, with good presence of oak and bourbon. This is a really nice scotch type ale, aged in oak bourbon barrels. Thumbs way up. Bitek (799) - Warszawa, POLAND - NOV 10, 2017
Wanilia, karmel, toffi, drewno, rodzynki, szlachetny alkohol. Średnie ciało, półsłodkie. Wysycenie średnie do niskiego, średnia goryczka - ciut alkoholowa. Dość mocno taniczne, ściągające, drewniane. Bez wątpienia duża klasa. mjoneill75 (6) - - NOV 3, 2017 does not count
UPDATED: NOV 3, 2017 Bourbon on the nose. Taste follows the nose with bourbon, oak, followed by vanilla and slight bitterness. Silky smooth the quintessential bourbon barrel scotch ale. pkomar (529) - Poznan, POLAND - NOV 2, 2017
Lots of wood, vanilla and caramel in aroma followed up by wet wood, leather, caramel and toffee on the tongue. Intense, complex beer, that Ive really enjoyed. Bill Becker (1775) - Casper, Wyoming, USA - NOV 2, 2017

I got this bottle as an extra in a trade with hoppymeal. Thanks Derek!
This pours from 12oz bottle a clear deep amber with a 2 finger head of off white foam. Lots of lacing and the foam just doesn't want to quit. Nice.
The smell isn't strong but I get good notes of carame and roasted malt.
The taste is a malty delight! Big caramel malt up front with notes of bourbon(done very nicely), chocolate, fig, and when I swish the beer in my mouth, I notice that it's very (dark) fruity. Delicious. The alcohol is hidden pretty well with just some warming after the swallow. It borders on sweet but there's some burnt flavour there that adds just enough bitterness to balance the flavours. Very nice and it has a medium mouthfeel and it finishes with a slightly woody flavour. This is some good stuff!
Thanks again, Derek!!
