3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAR 21, 2015 12oz bottle from Kalamazoo megabev. Pour is dark brown like cola, reddish hues. Head is offwhite sort of orangeish looking, quarter inch high. Moderate lacing. Smells like alcohol, maple, supple leather and perhaps a hint of cheddar? Tingly mouth feel, fairly low carbonation. More maple and vanilla in the taste, then whiskey and honey, slightly bitter pine hops are detectable as well. Finish is scotch flavored and has an alcoholic burning tingle. Updated 23-May-2013: Bottle aged from October 2012 . Liquid appearance the same but no head. Smoother, sweeter aroma. Same scents just less harsh. Smoother flavor as well, bitter malts reminiscent of most scotch ales, even more vanilla and possibly less maple flavored than fresh. Definitely a little bit better.
21-March-2015: Appearance unchanged from last time. Aroma is deep dark fruits, bourbon, molasses, similar to previous but harsher than description. Mouthfeel not tingly but oily and creamy. Flavor is verging on grain alcohol. Wouldn’t recommend aging for 2.5 years.
Aroma - bourbon, oak, caramelized sugar, fig or raisin, honey and spice.
Appearance - the body is black and the head is beige. The head is originally very large 2+" and settles slowly. Good lacing.
Taste - has rich caramel malt. The malt is complex. Their is a mix of carmalized sugars, raisins, oak, alcohol, bourbon, sweet biscuit, honey, sassafras. Not too much in the way of hops. Well balanced. Not too sweet.
Palate - the body is full, texture is slick, carbonation is average to lively, the finish is rich and boozy and a little sweet. Length is moderate in length. strowlands8 (278) - Ontario, CANADA - JAN 20, 2018
Bottle about 3 years old. Caramel, dates, super sweet coffee. Smells great. Taste is the same a little too sweet. Little bit burnt/smoke flavour. Basically no carb. Really solid old/scotch ale/barley wine. ptitlouis57 (10) - - JAN 19, 2018
Beerandhockey8 (444) - Three Forks, Montana, USA - JAN 18, 2018
From 12oz bottle to snifter. Pour is a dark brown/black, thick tan head. Nose is roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, booze, dark fruit. Taste is heavy bodied, mostly sweet. Oily mouthfeel, spicy long finish. yerffoeg (83) - Dinant, BELGIUM - JAN 17, 2018

Pretty good beer for a cold winter’s night. Would not have wanted more than one though.

Overall this feels more like sipping a supremely smooth bourbon then a beer. Aroma is oak barrel vanilla, bourbon, licorice, and dark, moist brown bread. Clear deep chestnut brown, with a creamy beige head. Taste follows the aroma with the addition of a little smoke and a noticeable alcohol kick. Sweet and succulent. Big Beer! Pours deep ruby red with a big frothy head, rather good retention. Looks gorgeous. Aroma is already amazing, rich and complex, a lot of sweetness, malt and caramel. Don't think I've ever smelt more bourbon in a beer than with this one, very intense, yet really nice. Very fruity and loads of vanilla. Big body, smooth mouthfeel. Flavour is just as rich and complex as aroma suggests. Very malty and sweet, immense amounts of caramel but adequate for a scotch ale. Again fruity and loads of vanilla, bourbon dominates this beer in a very pleasant way. Finishes long and sweet. Wow, a lot of depth and really delicious. Definitely one of the best scotch ale I've had. Just brilliant.
