On draft at the brewery for the 2016 Black Party! The pour on this one is great in color, but you can tell it’s really thin. There is a smaller white head that falls to a ring, leaving a couple random spots of lace. The aroma is more of an IPA up front. There is a good hoppy bitterness, a light leafy hop, and a good tropical fruit. The malt kicks in toward the end, but really controls it. It’s got a nice bitter roast and hop finish. The flavor is all IPA. There is a bitter hop right in your face and then it moves through a tropical fruit and into a light pine while maintaining the bitterness. The mouth feel is thin for a black IPA. I was expecting a little weight to it. The carbonation is decent and there isn’t bitter hoppy lingering aftertaste. This one was surprisingly good. kassner (1691) - Wexford, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 1, 2015
Quite a bit of coffee and a bit tin. A little smoky and more of a porter than an IPA. Black brown and oily. Modest head swoopjones (7020) - Buffalo, New York, USA - MAY 11, 2014
draft at Founders, one of 4 different black IPA’s i had here. solid, non complex BIPA. gets it right. Black *& IPA meld well together. Piney hops work with right about of chcolatey roast. well done TheBear11D (365) - Michigan, USA - MAY 5, 2014
The Black IPA pours a dark plumb to black with a thick tan head that lasts a long while. The aroma is earthy, floral and molasses. The flavor is resin, earthy, floral and molasses. Overall this is a pretty decent beer. b3shine (9138) - Indiana, USA - APR 30, 2014
Draft to pint at Founders. Looks good; a translucent dark cola with beige head that slowly dissipates into lacing. Smells solid; dark malt, hops, and roast. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Hops are bitter and piney. A good Black IPA.

A - Black body with dark brown edges. 2 fingers of dark khaki foam on top.
S - Roasted malts, pungent green hops, pine needles, hints of coffee.
T - Follows the nose with roasted barley, bittering green hops upfront, pine resin, notes of coffee, the roasted malts provide some sweetness but there is a dryness spicyness that keeps it in check. Finishes dry and bitter.
M - Medium full mouthfeel, creamy carbonation, dry finish.
The roast is not heavy and the hops are the main focus. Good mouthfeel with some spicy character. Good stuff.

Very dark very roastie flavor... Not enough hop presence to add a little balance to this beer. Tastes like a dark roastie version of the new recipe reds rye pa.. Just all right ... Hovering in the middle of the pack like so many others~

On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and shaker served, showing a ruby highlighted, semi-opague, black/brown color, with a creamy, tan head, and ribbony cling to the lacing. The aroma was some sweetness, florals, citrus & fruit, some resin, and a hint of vanilla? Roastiness and some earthiness were more secondary and underlying notes. The flavor offered a lingering, citrusy astringent, & earthy hop bitterness. Less than medium bodied, a little thin on the palate, but a bit of silkiness to the mouthfeel, and pleasantly dry finishing. njager246 (699) - grand rapids, Michigan, USA - SEP 29, 2013

2013-09-08. Black body with a nice tan head and lace. 4+ Aroma is pleasant with leafy green hop character and light roast with chocolate accents. Flavour is pleasant, green leafy hops and moderate bitterness throughout, some roast. Smooth average plus bodied palate, moderate carbonation. Pretty solid, it lets the hops shine past the roast which is sort of the point of a black IPA to me. On tap at Slows, Detroit
