Draft on tap at the brewery (Grand Rapids, MI). Pours a deeper dark blackish pour, well hazed with a bit of a ruby brownish glow on the bottom and edges. A frothy tannish head atop stays firmly sized, sticks around, laces well. Aromas throw gentle toastiness, biscuit, and florals. Some grapefruit, gentle pine, and florals show a decent to medium hop bitterness. As it warms, more firm to strong grappefruit rind, juice, and lemon. A bit toasty, resiny and pine elements present themselves. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, crisp and strong grapefruit bitter feel. Rind, juice, and florals present a good hop presence. A bit toasty, light biscuity feel. Smooths out more into the middle with a bit of body, still a firm citrusy and fresh hop presence. Backend shows grapefruit juice, piney resin elements work in with florals, a firm dryness. A touch of body and malt presence. Really fresh and constructed well, well balanced with that very pleasant hoppy bitter slant holding firm throughout. A darker malt feel gives it a bit of toast and body, gentle thickness but the hops still take this one home. Finish is dry, bitter, lingerinh hop presence hangs on. Not overwhelming or too much. Just right. Really nice fresh Black IPA. bwa5879 (959) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - JUL 15, 2013
Black pour, little white head. Very sweet citrus and bitter rye scent. Average carbonation, oily mouthfeel, slightly dry and bitter finish. Lots of delicious juicy hop flavor with a perfect blend of rye bitter malt. Very similar to their harvest ale but with rye addition. Very Very juicy and delicious. Pint at the pub. Black with tan head aroma is pine and dark malt sugar. Taste hits off with pine that lingers throughout. Well balanced with a big of chocolate and brown sugar. Very enjoyable. kdmcguire10 (18) - Grand Blanc, Michigan, USA - APR 25, 2012
Gorgeous looking beer. Near black with a fluffy tan head.
Aromas of tobacco, floral hops, smoke....
Taste is well balanced. Some hops but not overpowering.
Nice carbonation level on this.
Overall, this is a solid black IPA. MadIndian (2743) - Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 25, 2011
This was really good. All the hoppy qualities of an ipa and all the good ualities of a nice roasted porter. It was really blended well. satan165 (1020) - River Grove, Illinois, USA - APR 26, 2011
aroma requires time to allow every soft, feathery roast to come to life. appearance is dead opaque with quick reducing head. flavor is big balance; roast preponderant but bitterness comes later. fruit is tarnished but still provides some black raspberry and grape. filthy coffee filters abound. mouthfeel is filthy, clings, corrupts. delightful beer that leans far more towards ’black’ than ’ipa’ in the end.
