Tap at the 2009 Founders Black Party. Only the 2nd beer I’ve ever given a perfect rating to. This stuff is incredible! Black as black can be pour with a nice dense brown head. Notes of oak, vanilla, bourbon, maple sugar candy, and nuts. All in excellent balance. Thick oily mouthfeel. Crunchys (1) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - MAY 21, 2009 does not count
This is the best beer for the morning after. The ease that this high octaine beer goes down after a night of heavy drinking is dangerous power. Should be outlawed by thank God it’s not. gunhaver (1030) - Tampa, Florida, USA - JUN 27, 2009
UPDATED: SEP 3, 2009 Bottle at Cigar City BA Bolita release, courtesy Gillard. We docked whilst drinking this lovely elixir. Black pour, thick head, wet lacing on the glass. Nose is massive bourbon, maple syrup, nice caramel and chocolate. Very nice. Flavor is also fantastic: incredibly smooth bourbon, chocolate, caramel, maple, dry woodsy notes, vanilla. Simply delicious. As smooth as any big beer I’ve had, drinkable as hell, amazing, really. DocLock (11236) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 16, 2009
Draft at Craft Ale House. Wow, I lucked out and got the last 10 ounce pour of this one around 4:15 PM. The pour was onyx with a 3-finger dark brown head. One of the darker heads you will ever witness. The nose was beautiful, a medley of oaky, roasty dark malts, cacao, earthy dark fruit, and blackberry. The taste was awesome. I got dark malt, mild oaky and dark chocolate notes, some maple syrup, vanilla, miild black licorice, and a heavy blackberry undercurrent that stayed throughout, not as an overpowering component, but rather as a flavor note that gave an ever so slight tart berry twang to match all the other flavors intermingling. The heat was well hidden, and it went from an imperial stout mouthfeel briefly to a strong blackberry merlot mouthfeel and back. Just wonderful, and one of the best beers I have ever quaffed. It was so good I seriously considere bribing the guy next to me for the rest of his glass. Get ya some, even if you have to go to Vancouver to do it. ksurkin (1021) - Norfolk, Virginia, USA - MAY 26, 2010
12oz, counter pressure filled bottle, dated 2/10/10 courtesy of badnewsbeers. thanks, tyler! opens with a perfect pop and pours a thick, oily, jet-black with a thin, but definitely present dark brown head leaving sheets of oily lacing on the glass and a ring of bubble through the whole experience. aroma is absolutely wonderful with huge notes of dark chocolate, burnt espresso beans, and woody oak backed by sweet vanilla cake batter and brown sugar with an honest to goodness aroma of chalah bread french toast and maple syrup with just a touch of spicy bourbon. ohh, my god! that was my first reaction to the flavor of this brew. huge, massive, immense, bitter roast coffee, espresso, and dark chocolate initially that is beautifully balanced by sweet maple syrup, oak, vanilla bean, and brown sugar with just a hint of bourbon and faint dark fruits soaked in rum on the finish. palate is full bodied, sticky and sweet, but effortless to drink given the perfect carbonation with a roasted, maple, coffee finish. overall, i think breakfast stout is incredible and kbs is astounding but this is on a whole different level. absolutely one of the best damn beers i’v ever tasted. bravo to founders and thank you to tyler!

This is a phenomenal creamy stout - and hard as hell to get! It has very complex flavors - coffee, maple, malts. VertBaconStrips (2428) - Blerkablerka, VENEZUELA - JUL 13, 2011
RBSG 2010 - on tap at Founders and tapped onto the crappy notepad on my phone. First beer of the entire trip and I’m so stoked! Incredible aroma, yet commanding fudge, chocolate, slight sour, maple, marshmallows, smoke, light berries - unreal. Massive flavour - coffee, toffee, marsh, maple sweetness, chocolate, burnt, booze, wood, f’n awesome. Smooth, chewy big time, endless mouth my god!!!! This has to be the best beer I’ve ever had. A glass of KBS sits a mere hand length away.... fiver29 (1112) - Cleveland, Ohio, USA - OCT 21, 2011
On tap at Mike’s Bar and Grill during Cleveland Beer Week. Huge thanks to Founders for bringing some kegs of this this week. Just awesome. I have been searching for the perfect beer for years. I found it last night. The guy next to me said he had this last week in a bottle and tonight was his first time on tap. He said it was clearly better on tap. I have only had this once. On tap. Last night. So this review is based on what I enjoyed last evening. Pours pitch black with a slight tan ring around the edges. Looks like what I would expect. I put the glass up to my nose and whiff. Whoa. Layers of aromas. First I noticed a stickly sweet maple, then a touch of coffee, roast, and wood made a noticeable note here as well. I smelled this a few times because I was surprised by the complexity just in the aroma. I took a sip. My first thought was "Holy Fuck". An explosion of flavor hit me. Upfront their was a strong sense of coffee, followed very closely by a touch of maple sweetness, then a touch of dark roast from the grain bill and a slight note of vanilla with some booze notes that was not at all hot. The booze flavors were hid well by the way this was barrel aged and melded perfectly in the finished product. There really was no booze as there was just a note of it and it made for a perfectly rounded beer. The finish combined all of the above ever so slightly. There was no cloying sweetness. Nothing over the top. Everything in this beer was perfectly represented from start to finish. I honestly never thought I would give a perfect score to any beer. Until now. This one for me goes beyond the hype and was worth every sip. NearABeer (8) - COKATO, Minnesota, USA - NOV 29, 2011 does not count
Amazing beer! Had it on tap for the first time a while back one of the best Imperial Stouts i have had. kdmcguire10 (18) - Grand Blanc, Michigan, USA - FEB 21, 2012
Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Founders CBS snifter
Dark as night pour with a fluffy caramel head, 1 finger that dissipates rather quickly.
Sweet milk chocolate smell blended perfectly with espresso notes. The maple and bourbon ties it all together perfectly.
So incredibly smooth tasting. Roasted caramel and coffee notes. Slight sweetness from the maple, but it’s not overpowering. It blends so well with the bourbon. The alcohol is so well-hidden with just a slight warming sensation on the back end. Everything a world-class stout should taste like. Wow.
Luxurious mouthfeel. Thick, luscious velvet-like texture. I could almost eat this with a spoon.
Epic beer! This is truly a masterpiece - a real luxury. The perfect stout in my estimation. This is the gold standard by which all imperial stouts should be judged.
