COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editors Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

This is about as near perfection as it gets. Fall is here, the air is cool, and the beer has backbone! MALT backbone. Balance is always the key when it comes to strong ales. Its so easy to over hop in an attempt to keep up with the aggressive malt flavors you find in these beers, but Founders is keeping things in line balancing the sweet, caramel, toasty, chocolatey, bready, toffee, and coffee notes with the earthy, spicy, and bitter flavor of the hops. It is a super smooth drinker and the almost 10% abv is so well hidden I didnt notice any of the usual phenolic notes you sometimes find in high gravity ales. I plan on stashing some of this in my "cellar" to see how it ages.

(Bottle, Monks Caf, Wallingatan, Stockholm) Reddish brown colour with brief, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of dried fruit, wild berries, caramel, earthy hops and a touch of oak wood. Malty taste with dried fruit, caramel, some chocolate and earthy, slightly citrussy hops. More than medium body, slightly vinous with some malt sweetness. Well balanced and tasty. Vey nice beer.

This ale poured a dark orange colour with a quickly dissipating, light tan head. To the nose there are scents of ripe fruit, scotch, butter and rum. First taste is very smooth and creamy with a whisky/rum like flavour along with thick malt and butter flavour. The finish is thick and sweet with the bourbon flavour lasting throughout.

Pours a light, milk chocolate brown with a mid sized off white head. Big, rich nose. Sweet, with a definite hit of alcohol. Heavy bourbon on the nose. Thick, heavy on the alcohol. Wood tannins. Sweet toffee and vanilla. A lot, almost too much going on. This has to be the bourbon aged. I really dont like it as well as what I tried on draft in the past.
