COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editors Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle. Aroma of pleasant vanilla malt and light oak. Pours an awesome deep ruby with very scant fine white head and fine sediment. Lacing is also scant. taste is sweet malts followed by oak with light booze then sweet finish. Well balanced. Mouth-feel is light to medium. Do not feel the 9.8 ABV. Oak age does not overpower the beer itself as it often does. Gotta try this

35.5cl bottle. Pours amber/brown with very small head. Aroma is caramel, licorice and fruits. The flavour is very similar, I would say dark ripe fruits along with caramel and licorice. Sweet on the palate, not cloying. Medium body, soft carbonation. Decent, nothing remarkable though.

Twelve ounce bottle from Bottles N Bins in Monterey, Ca for 3.29. Light amber pour with a lot of carbonation bubbles visible. Aroma is molasses. Flavor is sweet and includes molasses and malt. I did not get any oak character. Pretty easy to drink considering the 9.8 abv.

Bottle. Aroma rich caramel, vanilla oak and spiced dark fruits. A potent beginning for a dark amber ale with thin broken lace top. The taste is perilously close to barley wine in my view. Densely dark sugared and fruit packed. A fruitcake in a glass but wonderfully smooth. I suspect its an ale that is drunk solo and not simply because of its 9.8% kick. Theres a lot left on the palate un terms of malty complexity. It is getting a high rating from me but also a health warning. Probably the best thing to come out of Grand Rapids since MSUs first class.
