COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of sk8viking. Hazy, dark amber golden with a creamy, beige head leaving laces. Spicy aroma with distinct bourbon notes - I suspect Founders actually ADD bourbon here. Very full-bodied with sweet caramel malt and again these delicate, oaky bourbon notes. Absolutely wonderful. 290407

Dunkel rötlichbraunes Bier mit geringe Schaumkrone. Geruch süß malzig, fruchtig, holzig, leicht alkoholisch, genauso ist auch der Geschmack.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Fergus. Pours mostly clear orange with mild particulate presence and a frothy off-white head. Lots of ripe and tangy fruits in the nose, some berries, caramel, spices. Medium to heavy sweet flavor with gooey malts, some cinnamon, rich berries, subtle spice, some leafy hops. Full bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carbonation. Finishes warming and lightly sticky, with some further spice character, toffee, bread, slight dates. Good stuff.

Clear amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is quite sweet malty, caramel and a little alcohol. Flavor is very sweet and moderate bitter. Sweet finish with warming alcohol. 060711

Dickflüssig wirkender Antrunk, der fast überladen würzig ist. Sehr süß, leicht herb. Hellmalzig, klebrig. Weiterhin überladen, deutliche Kräuternoten sind vorhanden. Rabbiat! 8/8/7/9/11/9

Hazy amber color; small head. The aroma is less interesting than the first time, the flavor is as rich as I remembered: sweet caramel and toffee, strong vanilla; without being thick, the sugars are sticky on the lips; and strong final bitterness, a bit woody.

2009-08-31, bottle at Monk’s Café, Wallingatan, 9-5-9-4-18=45
Red amber color; small creamy head. Extremely rich aroma, malt caramel and vanilla oak. Strong body, rich caramel and malt flavor, perfectioned by the vanilla and the hops. Truly enjoyable.

Bottle split at Leightons Cloud base, thanks to Fergus, 05/05/15. One I’ve certainly had in the past but good to catch up with a rake. Rich amber with a decent beige covering. Nose is rich fruit, caramel fudge, dates, toffee, fruit cake mix. Taste comprises rich fruit cake, sweet licks, toffee, dark fruit rinds, stewed dates, toasted brown sugar. Full bodied, fine carbonation, sweet licks in the close. Solid stuff.

12 oz. bottle, pours an opaque dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma of syrupy sweet malts, caramel, some English malt notes, and some peppery spice. Flavour brings out some peppery spice, more than offset by English caramel malts and syrupy sweetness - sort of a rummy boozy sweetness to it. No hop presence whatsoever, just some peppery notes that are quite bothersome. Not so enjoyable to me - way overrated.

Bottle. Nice head with good duration. Color is amber. Aroma and taste are sweet malt, caramel, tar, wood and hops.

harrisoni (19529) - Ashford, Kent, ENGLAND - NOV 3, 2009
Bottle from De Molen beer shop. Clear russet, lasting dark beige. Some strong intense malt with some bourbon on the aroma. Better in mouth, the malts are strong and syrupy and some very good ESB style malts. Bourbon is present but not over the top or unbalanced. Some vanilla comes through. Alcohol is really well hidden with just some fullness. Hops on end are good, slightly bitter and hide any burn. Stupidly drinkable. Pretty decent beer, if not exactly the kind of thing that I would normally like.
