COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editors Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle. It pours a nice-looking pale copper color and a small, off-white head. Malty sweetness, caramel, some cloves and alcohol, and theres also a vanilla and woody touch of bourbon. Full-bodied, warming and pleasantly carbonated. The flavor has a distinct bourbon touch, with bread, caramel, quite a lot of sweetness, some raisins, a fine resiny bitterness, alcohol warmth, even more sweetness and a bitterness taking you towards the end. Sweet, slightly bitter finish. Overall, too sweet, but really lovely anyway. A bit heavy on the alcohol too, but definitely lovely. 101009

Deep amber color, steady creamy beige head. Intensive aroma of rye bread, cane sugar, hops and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, liquerish palate. Flavor is very silky, lots of cream candies, rye bread, hops, toffee, even some salty licorice notes.

A: The pour is a dark, dark mahogany color with a lot of yeast floaties, and a thin ring of cream colored head. S: The nose is quite rich with notes of sherry, dark fruit (raisins in particular), caramel, vanilla, and alcohol. T: The sweet caramel malt is the primary flavor component with some sweet, dark fruits, vanilla, and quite a bit of alcohol. Theres also a mild bitterness. M: The body is medium with a creamy carbonation and mouthfeel. D: A very nice old ale and a good beer to sip on throughout an evening.

Toffee-beige colour and hazy. Earthy, toffeeish nose with late alcohol, minerals and shiitake mushrooms. Sweet, with a hard body. Some brown sugar, more minerals and late alcohol. Somewhat uncohesive.

Bottle, 9.3%. Very nice vanilla, oak, cigarbox aroma. Cloudy red orange colour. The flavour has a lot of vanilla, some coconut, hint of cream, all the nice stuff. Low bitterness, but balanced by the alcohol.

12 oz. bottle, pours an opaque dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma of syrupy sweet malts, caramel, some English malt notes, and some peppery spice. Flavour brings out some peppery spice, more than offset by English caramel malts and syrupy sweetness - sort of a rummy boozy sweetness to it. No hop presence whatsoever, just some peppery notes that are quite bothersome. Not so enjoyable to me - way overrated.
