COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editorís Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle thanks to Alex. Pours reddish amber with almost no head. Nose is cherry, oak and medicine. Taste follows suit but is quite pleasant.

12oz btl. Pours a clear copper with a minimal white head. Great unique aroma of strong dark fruit, caramel malt and spice. Huge dark fruit notes and candied caramel sweetness. Has a nice spice laden hoppiness towards the end and a kind of boozy finish.Smooth fruit and candy sweetness. Another solid founders brew.

Pours a cloudy orange color. Nearly no head to be seen upon pouring. Smell is sweet and malty, nothing to particular. Taste is as it smells, with a little bit of booze. Drinkable with just enough complexity to make it enjoyable.

This pours an amber-copper color with a decent sized off-white head. Not much left on top. The aroma shows sherry, toffee, caramel, plums, and cherries. Very Barleywine like. The flavor is like a smooth sherry or rum with a lot of sweet toffee. Red licorice and cherries contribute. This does flirt with being too sweet but some slightly bitter grapefruit hops help keep that in check. Very smooth, no alcohol burn, and pretty easy going down. This isnít a stand out but it is pretty solid stuff.

(bottle) Never a lack of flavor or substance from this brewer. This old ale takes on characteristics of whisky or bourbon barrel aging. Huge malt and hops complexity. Alcohol hidden within the rich flavor.

Pours a rich orange/red. Good lacing. Aroma of spiced caramel. Taste starts rich and sweet followed by a subtle spicy bitterness and a lingering citrus flavor.†

Malty sweet aroma with some booze from a headless brown pour. The flavor is malt sweet up front with a nice hop balance to it. Very nice after taste and the alcohol is well hidden. Good one.

12 oz Bottle. Appearance is dark amber color with light, beige head. Aroma is of malty sweetness, toffee, dark fruits, and a slight boozy-ness. Taste is complex - it started off with a heavy character of toasted malts, sweet bread, and caramel. As the it warmed up, there was more and more strong dark fruit flavors especially plum, which combined with the alcohol gave it a somewhat boozy quality. As my palate grew more accustomed to the heavy malt bill, I noticed more of the subtle hop bitterness that was lying underneath. Palate was full-bodied, thick in texture sitting heavy in the mouth, light and soft carbonation, and a bitter finish.

Pours amber brown with thin white head. Aroma is caramel, nutty, dark fruit and a faint hint of peach. Taste is sweet with caramel undertones, finish is light acidic bitters. Has an oily mouthfeel that is somewhat sticky on the back end.
