COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Lightly chilled:Kasteel glass. Great looking dark orange/brown liquid. Small creamy, head. Very slow rising bubbles and nice, lacing. Overall earthy aroma. Caramel based aroma with wood, soil, light hops and tasteful alcohol. Texture is very soft, almost light, though this is a thick beer. Upfront caramel, wood, fruit, and soil. Before the finish is more wood, caramel, and a little alcohol on the sides of the mouth. Finish is long with light earthy hop, with strong caramel, wood, toast, and light alcohol. After opening up a bit, becomes a very well put together, mellow, but flavorful and interesting shot at the old ale style. Very Respectable

Pours a cloudy caramel color with a full, thick, off white head. Whiskey and oak jump out from the nose, while earthy malt, molasses, and light toffee are found as well. The taste is sweet, though not overly so. Whiskey dominates all flavors here. As the bottle boasts, secondary impressions are molasses and oak. Its still earthy, but I find much more floral elements than earthiness. Vanilla and raisin round this one out. Whiskey finish. Medium in body, thick in texture, and more soft in carbonation. I like whiskey and I like the taste of whiskey in beer. But as this is the main theme, I don't think enough was done to curb the big whiskey taste that this one pushes.

Barwa brązowa, piana średnia. Aromat karmel, skórka od chleba, winogrona, drewno i lekka wanilia. W smaku przypieczony chleb, toffi, melasa, czerwone owoce i dębina. Jest delikatna wanilia od beczki. Pifko wytrawne, alko totalnie niewyczuwalne. Bardzo dobre pifko.

Bottle from Systembolaget. God the smell is so rich and reminsd me so something so clearly but I cannot put my finger on it, maybe it is sherry, maybe it is just barley wine. No okay ive got it, its whisky. HUGE HUGE whisky smell, i suppose that comes from the bourbon barrels. Colour is a dark shery colour. Taste is also very similar to whisky or anejo tequilla. Alcohol, deep malts. Nothing like the old ales youll find in the UK. Some aged hops in there (simcoe?). Reminds me a bit like drinking an American version of a Westvleteren 12. Its very nice, not a favourite but I can see why people would go nuts for it.

And Conte was impressed with the midfielder, although he admits he may need more time to settle than the likes of Zappacosta, even though the defender only joined the west London outfit on deadline day.

2 finger off-white head. Deep ruby coloured beer. Beautiful.

Aroma is plum, caramel, red grape, raisins, dark rye bread, oak barrel and a hint of vanilla.

Taste is dark rye bread, wheat, toffee, slight coffee grounds, slight soil, oak barrel and dried dark fruits. A bit hard to find the actual taste notes, unfortunately. They kind of hide in one big, 'dark' bubble.

Mouthfeel is powerful and punchy. Really tears at your throat, I love it! Gentle alcohol, really well hidden. Medium bitterness. Medium carbonation that stirs the beer up nicely. Dense and rich.

Overall: Great sipper, as expected by Founders. This could've been a total masterpiece if the flavours were as aggressive as the mouthfeel. This brewery haven't done me wrong yet.
