COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Frangelic Mountain Brown is the quintessential taproom “one-off” beer: Founders’ brewers created the Mountain Brown series for their taproom in Grand Rapids in 2007. Frangelic Mountain Brown is the 16th iteration in the series of popular brown ales—and it likely won’t be the last. The singular characteristic of this beer comes from the use of hazelnut coffees in the brewing process. The beer has distinct aromatics with sweet and nutty flavors beautifully balanced. Founders is known for its beers made with coffee (i.e., the Breakfast Stout series), but this is both the brewery’s first brown ale and its first beer brewed with hazelnut coffees to be bottled. It clocks in at 9% ABV.

750 bottle (thanks to AndyReynolds) - pours murky brown with tan head. Nose is chocolate, wood and hazelnut. Flavor adds alcohol and toastiness. Dry and bitter finish. Lightly sweet.

Bottle. Great aroma; chocolate malts. Notes of cinnamon, brown sugar, coffee, vanilla, and hazelnut. Palate is surprisingly light. Flavor sweet finishing dry, damn impressive.

Tulip pour, deep brown, light, thin head. Aroma is intense. Fantastic! Coffee, super hazelnut, smooth and sweet, caramel. Flavor is slightly less, good hazelnut notes, smooth creamed coffee, nutty, caramel sweetness. Really nice. Palate is a decent medium with light lacing. Fantastic!

Draft at Binny’s South Loop. Pours a translucent deep brown with red. Thin offwhite head that fades. The nose is a big blast of cocoa and coffee, hazlenut and vanilla. Yep, frangelico. The beer is kind of lost overall. On tasting, it really hides the abv well. Seems missing the base beer again in taste. Somewhat thin on the palate. Reminiscent of irish coffee. Sweet to start but it does dry out. An interesting go but not really a great beer. Would probably work better with they porter, actually. Okay.

Not sure where RB gets off calling this a Strong Ale. It’s obviously a brown ale brewed with coffee and artificial hazelnut flavoring. There is no beer like quality to this. It tastes like the $2 Iced Hazelniut Coffee I purchase at Dunkin Donuts except it costs $15. Drain pour

Pours brown with no head. Aroma of hazelnuts, chocolate, coffee and caramel. Taste follows, really nice hides alcohol well. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: DEC 18, 2012 Bottle shared by bobbysolo. Pours a deep brown with a small off white head, Aroma is really rich coffee and hazelnut notes, touches of nuttiness, maple, and a bit of a dessert cake glaziness. Flavor follows suit with some very rich and sweet hazelnut and notes of roasty coffee. Both are aggressive throughout with some caramel and toffee notes that are background. Finishes a bit bitter and biting from the coffee. Medium to medium full body and soft carbonation
