Frangelic Mountain Brown is the quintessential taproom “one-off” beer: Founders’ brewers created the Mountain Brown series for their taproom in Grand Rapids in 2007. Frangelic Mountain Brown is the 16th iteration in the series of popular brown ales—and it likely won’t be the last. The singular characteristic of this beer comes from the use of hazelnut coffees in the brewing process. The beer has distinct aromatics with sweet and nutty flavors beautifully balanced. Founders is known for its beers made with coffee (i.e., the Breakfast Stout series), but this is both the brewery’s first brown ale and its first beer brewed with hazelnut coffees to be bottled. It clocks in at 9% ABV.

Clear red-brown with big, creamy, tan head / Big nose of cocoa, coffee, and hazelnut / Medium body, a touch thin of both malts and hops, sweet and somewhat cloying, acidic, with fair finish / Flavors of hazelnut coffee, cocoa, dry barley, cardboard, and vanilla / Finding flavored coffee repulsive, and being a fan of Founders, this is a tough one for me. Even ignoring the hazelnut coffee flavor, the weak body and lack of other flavor interest makes this a drain pour for me.

November 20, 2015 - with blankboy, jercraigs and mabel - 750ml bottle. "and he doesn't like Jeff too????" - you had to be there. Clear ruby pour with a decent tan head (4-). Aroma is hazelnut and very light coffee, earthy spicy heat a bit too - almost like a pepper beer; not overly sweet (8-). Taste is sweeter - mostly hazelnut and mild acidic coffee - decent background earthy (not spicy) bitterness - a bit thin. Watery, lightly acidic, a bit stick, modest carbonation, medium coffee-bitter finish. Nice.

750ml bottle. Poured a cloudy deep amber near brown and a small sized off white head. Hazelnuts dominate the aromas. Caramel, some vanilla, lighter coffee, and lighter hazelnuts (compared to the aromas) in the tastes.

UPDATED: OCT 14, 2016 At B.U.M.B. in Antwerp, shared with 77ships, MarcoDL and Craftmember. Strong ’brown’ ale with hazelnut coffee added, which seems about just the right ingredient to complement the natural flavors of the style. Snow white, moussy head lacing in little dots, slowly dissolving; warm amber colour with orangey hue, notably lighter than ordinary brown ale - more a (very strong) amber ale, in fact. Intense, sweetly perfumed bouquet of biscuit, candied orange, ’stroopwafel’, amaretto, hazelnut oil, honey, white chocolate, pancakes, cinnamon, vanilla, rum. Sweet, candied onset, marmelade and candied banana, some redcurrant sourishness for balance underneath, not cloying, medium carbo, the striking ’stroopwafel’ effect returning in the mouth over a caramelly, honeyish, biscuity malt middle, retronasal impressions of coffee with cinnamon, a beautiful sweet spiciness, paired with a spicy hop touch; the sugary sweetness sticks a bit in the end along with a warming alcohol note. Absolutely delicious, decadent yet refined dessert beer.

At Hopishop 2016. Aroma of hazelnut, mocha and cream. Rich taste of hazelnut, creamy mocha, malt and caramel. Delicious beer.

Bomber sampled @ HopisHop B.U.M.B. 2016. Dark amber, little tanned head. Nose is out of this world, amazing hazelnut to the max & stroopwafels, sugar, hazelnut, brown sugar, pancakes, so good. Taste is very nice, not as spectacular as the smell, still caramel malt, sugar, warming, lower hazelnut, some pancakes. Caramel, sugar & toffee body, bit thin, very nice brew. Fresh this must have been out of this world.

Rating #1,800. 750 mL bottle shared with ebone1988. This is the second time I’ve had this beer. Finally rating. The pour is a darker brown color with a bit of garnet shining through. It’s not completely foggy, so there is a little clarity through it, which I’m not too fond of. There is an excellent thick khaki colored film all up and down the lace with a film of head. The aroma is all hazelnut. Damn did this hold up well. It’s got a nice coffee presence as well. There is a nice sweet malt and a light chocolate behind all of that that really bring it together. The flavor is really good. There is a huge nuttiness up front that makes its way through a sweet milk chocolate and light caramel malt before the coffee kicks in. It’s just layered, complex, and delicious! The coffee and hazelnut really take it through to the finish. It’s excellent. The mouth feel is thicker and heavy with a beautiful soft velvety carbonation and a lingeringly nutty, coffee and chocolate infused aftertaste. This is a fantastic beer.

[My bottle (750ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jercraigs & mabel -- c/o Glouglouburp] Pours a dark amber-brown with a small semi-lasting bubbly off-white head. Nice aroma with lots of hazelnuts, some coffee, caramel malt and some light hops. Nutty and malty flavour with a decent amount of hops. Medium bodied. I really liked this.

mabel (10004) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 27, 2015
[7944-20151120] 500mL bottle. Sugary sweet coffee taffy caramel aroma. Hazy, dark mahogany red body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. Coffee taffy sweet grains flavour. Medium-full body. Sweet and tasty. (8/3+/8/4/16) 3.9

2015-11-20. Dark mahogany brown body, small beige head. 3+ Aroma is lovely up front, earthy nutty hazelnut, coffee roast follows, to its detriment for me. Flavour is similar, sweet nutty hazelnut, hints of caramel, roast follows, less prominently than in the aroma. Average plus bodied palate, moderate carbonation. Decent. 7/4/7/3/14-15 Bottle shared by Blankboy.
