Nice dark brown with a light colored foam. Malty aroma, very minimal. Nice malt forward taste. Deep but not woody. Maybe a bit of chocolate. Well carbonated. Overall a very good brown ale.
More beer please... rumproasts (5359) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - DEC 5, 2012
bottle. brown with small head. brown ale, but slightly fruity as well. hint of nuts. not sure what I was hoping for, but this is somewhat underwhelming, though certainly not bad. Silphium (3199) - Traverse City, Michigan, USA - DEC 4, 2012
Bottle. Deep coppery body, thick puffy tan head. Malty nose with toffee, tobacco, grapeskin, toast, and hints of chocolate. Sweet body, toasty, nutty, and a tad leathery, with grapeskin, cocoa, toffee, and tobacco, even some roasty elements. The beer finishes somewhat tannic and bitter. Smooth and creamy. A malty departure for a hophead’s brewery, and pleasant to drink. JoePeesie (925) - Long Lake, Illinois, USA - DEC 4, 2012
Pours a deep drown with off white head. Nose and taste are earthy and dry. Not sweet enough to be an old ale, to complex to be a brown. Fitting.

Dark amber colored pour with an off-white head. Toffee and dark fruit notes with some roasted malt, chocolate, and leather. Somewhat watery, a bit of toasted nuts, and some toast. Sort of a bland, watery flavor. Toffee and toasted malt sweetness, some chocolate, cocoa powder, and a hint of roast. A weird leathery quality, hints of dark fruit, and some toasted nuts. A rare miss from Founders.

22 oz. bottle. Dark brown pour with a minimum head. Aroma of rich brown malts, mild oatmeal, slight tobacco and leathery notes. Smells nice. Flavor is dry and leathery. Lots of brown malts, rye bread, some crackers. Lots of dark bread. Quite nice. Nice, full mouthfeel, good, complementary carbonation. Finishes dry and leathery. Nice beer. Pours dark with a thin white head. Aroma of malt and a hint of sweetness. Taste is malt with some earthy notes and a wood like off bitter with hints of smoke. Some lacing on the glass. Nothing special stands out with this offering from Founders. OK at best. DalzAle (2037) - Eden Prairie, Minnesota, USA - NOV 28, 2012
Bottle thanks to woodchopper on BA! Dirty brown pour, medium light carbonation and a slightly roasty nose. Flavor is medium malt, light cocoa a little bit of hops and metallic flavors. Not a bad beer, I’d buy it if it were priced right (under $8/ 6 pack) blackflag321 (689) - Lansing, Michigan, USA - NOV 28, 2012
750ml pour to pint glass. Appearance and some of the taste is like a brown ale, but much more on the palate: malt, syrup, nut and more . . . all roasted together. A very decent, full-bodied beer. SuIIy (1983) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - NOV 24, 2012
Bottles. Pours a clear brown color with a small foamy head. Nose is maple nutty sugary. Palate is lightly sticky with a clean finish. Flavors of nuts and dates with a light brown sugar.
