UPDATED: FEB 13, 2012 Last brew of the day. Pours obsidian with thin, tan head. Nose is chocolate, coffee, with some "mudslide." Taste is more coffee and bitter chocolate. Palate is medium, smooth, and balanced. Definitely makes me want to try out their other much-celebrated stout offerings. This hit all the marks it should have. 10.5% ABV at the brewpub.
Update: Had to add a couple points to this after trying the 2012 bottle version and having developed a greater appreciation for the style. What a huge beer this is, major viscosity and big flavor. I’m going to age a couple and see what happens. ryanfolty (2579) - Bourbon County, Minnesota, USA - JUL 14, 2011
UPDATED: JAN 26, 2014 Date: July 14, 2011 Mode: Bottle Source: Discount Liquor, Waukesha, WI Appearance: Black oily with slight amount of tan brown head. Aroma: Coffee, chocolate and alcohol. Flavor: Consistent with aroma, a slightly bitter finish, and relatively thick/full bodied. Other: Great beer, but not quite in that top echelon of imperial stouts.
January 12, 2013 - picked up another bottle at AV. Wow, black pour with nice light brown head and lacing. Just looks like a million bucks. Differences from my first rating are the noticeable piney hops in aroma and taste due to this being a fresh bottle. I have a few extras so plan to age and see how it changes over time. Pours black. Nose is dark fruits. Fig, prune and chocolate. Taste is strong alcoholic. Mouth feel is thin and bitter. Chocolate and coffee on the finish with lots of alcohol like a strong Belgian ale. dbarnold (1127) - Bethesda, Maryland, USA - JUL 3, 2011
UPDATED: JUL 27, 2011 Great expression of what an imperial stout from America can and should be. huge hops and tons of everything else as well. Strong coffee and chocolate notes. Very thick, viscous stuff that you drink slow and savor. Looking forward to aging a couple to see how it changes.

A - Served a jet black color with a finger of frothy tan-brown head atop. The head hangs around for a while before leaving behind lots of lacing.
S - Rich deep roasted caramel and chocolate malts. There is also a touch of sweet milk and roasted coffee as well.
T - Starts off with lots of deep roasted caramel flavor and some coffee. Though the middle some more roasted flavors and a bit of milk sweetness and some chocolate flavor comes thorough. The finish is a mix of roasted caramel and coffee with a touch of booze that lingers.
M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. The beer feels smooth and a touch creamy. he finish is sweet with some roasted and chocolate flavors and a bit of warming from the alcohol.
D - Very drinkable. Very nice balance of roasted, sweet, and chocolate flavors throughout. The beer is also really rich and complex.
