Thanks to Momar42 for the bottle! 12 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip. A: Pours an ultra-viscous looking pitch black color. Its an amazingly heavy looking monster. The head is a one-finger dark tan color with fantastic texturing. Retention isnt perfect, but the level of lacing is downright beautiful. It just looks amazing. S: Wow, this is one of the most chocolaty-smelling imperial stouts Ive ever encountered. There are also notes of hazelnut, cream, vanilla, roasted malts, coffee, and slight dark fruit. No frills, but fuckin fantastic regardless. T: It seems like Founders took the basic essence of a standard-issue RIS and distilled it into rapturous glory. I first notice flavors of cream, vanilla, and chocolate; before roasted malts envelop the tastebuds. The umami qualities on the finish are glorious, melding together with anise, tobacco, and pine flavors. It has just enough complexity to keep the palate guessing, while being simple enough that one can easily pick out the differing handful of flavors. Yum. M: You wouldnt expect such a thick, creamy monster to be so drinkable - but the delicately dry finish and brilliant alcohol concealment means this will be all gone before you know what to do. Its not so dry as to render its aftertaste gutted, however; some syrupy linger remains without creating overpowering sweetness. One of the best RIS palate feels Ive ever encountered outside of Nogne Os RIS. O: Founders didnt reinvent the wheel, they just showed every other brewer how it should be made in the first place. A brilliant reminder why this is my favorite style out there, and a not-so-brilliant reminder that this was the only bottle I had. :(

How can this not be a 100 for style? I felt the beer looked like a picture perfect stout and had exactly what I want in terms of mouthfeel (full velvety smoothness). Deep inky black with a rusty tan head. Incredibly thick and full mouthfeel. The taste is raisins, roasty chocolate and oatmeal smoothness. A good depth of flavor. Excellent.

Snifter. Opaque pour with a dense, mocha-toned head. Lovely nose of, of course, tons of roasted and fudgy malt, wood, definitely prominent noble hop notes of earthiness, spice, and herbaceousness. A bit of booze mingles with the herbal hops and chocolate, creating a sort of mint-like synergy. Really nice. Mouthfeel is so deliciously milky and rich, nowhere near cloying, super dense chocolate and roast, velvety hot-chocolate-and-coffee combo, a bite of bitterness, lingering noble hops provide a clear edge and a streak of brightness among the heft. I can easily see why this is so popular. Im ashamed I only got a single 12oz!

Excellente.

Bottle from Hopt.nl, bottled on 11/30/16, 35 cl sample. Pitch black oily color, medium superdark brown frothy head. Aroma of chocolate fudge and molasses, roasty coffee and slight spicy licorice and tobacco. Big and bold roasty bitterness with hints of dark bread. Slight alcohol burn in the finish. For me, lacks a bit sweetness and creamy chocolate. It focuses mainly on big and bold roast. Actually, Im not that impressed.

Pours thick motor oil with a quite dark brown head. Aroma of roasted barley malts and licorice. Slick mouthfeel, with a strong roasted malts character, some leather, coffee, booze and notes of licorice and dark fruits. Very creamy, with a pleasant booze comfort after swallow. Another big ale by Founders!

12 oz single bottle from Tops Liquors in Tempe. Black appearance with a fluffy, lacy, dark brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, molasses, light earth and light alcohol. Similar flavor, dark, roasted, malty and rich with a lingering finish. Medium to full body with soft carbonation and a smooth, creamy feel. Nicely done overall.

Aroma: mostly alcohol, some chocolate. Taste: smooth milk chocolate, toffee, cappuccino. Delicious. Wonderful. Alcohol perfectly hidden, but theres still some bitterness reserved for aftertaste.
