Had on tap at a Philly Beer Week event in 2012. Rebranded as "Curmudgeon’s Better Half". This beer had all the malty complexity I’ve ever wanted in an old ale. It had a great scent of bourbon, molasses, and maple. The taste was rich but clean. It didn’t linger on the palate too long. Definitely one of the top 5 beers I’ve ever had. Underrated next to the CBS in my opinion. jmagnus87 (2912) - Rockford, Illinois, USA - MAR 30, 2012
750ml bottle poured into a snifter. Pours black with about a finger of dark tan head. Aroma of maple syrup, whisky, vanilla and caramel. Taste is about the same. It’s like getting drunk on a bourbon covered pancake. Full bodied with a thick and creamy texture. Soft carbonation and a very long finish. Overall, I really really like this beer. I would gladly drink this every day! MarkSachon (1023) - Pennsylvania, USA - APR 16, 2012
Bomber bottle from my neighbor Bob with my thanks for allowing me to enjoy this fantastic ale. Superlatives are not adequate in describing anything about this, simply stated, this is one of the best beers on the market. Close you eyes and you might think you’re drinking a bottle of bourbon --- it’s that rich in spirits. Check the sediment at the finish and you’ll find floating remnants of the barrels it’s aged in waiting to be taken down with the dregs. onedawger (60) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUL 4, 2012
Cellared for awhile and finally opened today. Deep amber, dark orange. Smells of bourbon barrel aged goodness. Since slightly aged, the alcohol is strong, and stays in the background until it warms your mouth. Rich, thick and fragrant, full of notes of raisin, oak, bourbon, smooth and sweet. What a pleasure. Strong aromas with every sip. GandGKevin (934) - Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA - AUG 25, 2013
Aromas of bourbon and molasses. Tastes like English toffee. Delicious! Founders rocks!

750 mL bottle shared with ebone1988. Had this one before, finally rating it. The pour is a dark dark ruby, tons of sediment lurking, with a light khaki colored head that falls to a film while offering some great lace. The aroma is beautiful. There is a wonderful dark fruit presence with molasses and a sweet maltiness. The barrel offers a great bourbon character and a lot of vanilla on the back end. It's a little boozy on the back, but really good. The flavor is damn good. There is some molasses and a lot of dark fruits up front. The booze is a little hot on the beginning, but it really mellows out as the other flavors move in. Maple is present here over the nose. The bourbon gives way in lieu of vanilla, molasses, dark fruits, and a beautiful malt. The mouth feel is spot on. There is a great viscous creaminess and a soft carbonation that lets it stick to the palate. The aftertaste is lingeringly warming and full of vanilla and molasses and a touch of maple. Damn.

Curmudgeon’s Better Half released 2-13-2012 if very well balanced it has a golden brown pour. It smells of sweet bourbon and maple. You wouldn’t know the alcohol content is 11.9% all the well blended flavors make it very enjoyable. Great job again Founders. jstraw (1967) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - FEB 18, 2012

Tap, just happened to walk into a bar this and thought I would see what all the buzz was for. I don’t usually like barley wine like ales. But wow. This one is worth the buzz I would say. It was quite amazing. It had a light head. The colour was fairly dark. Didn’t look filtered. The aroma is bourbon, a bit mapley. Taste is very complex, lots going on. Lots of bourbon lots of sweet dark fruits lots of heavy malts. All blending very to make a very smooth tasty tasty beer DocLock (10683) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 25, 2012
750 from PUB’N. Pours turbid deep dull coppery/Carolina mud color with 1-finger ecru head. Nose is oaky spirity bourbon, maple, hops, molasses, fruit. Tastes malty, with a big oaky and bourbony flavor upfront, some old aley yeasty esters at mid palate, and more fusel heat late. As it warms, becomes like an old ale/cognac hybrid,m and I enjoyed every sniff and taste. This one is big, complex, and just pounds you into submission with its greatness (that’s what she said).
