COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A bit of backwoods pleasure without the banjo. This strong stout is brewed with a hint of coffee and vanilla then aged in oak bourbon barrels. Our process ensures that strong bourbon undertones come through in the finish in every batch we brew. We recommend decanting at room temperature and best enjoyed in a brandy snifter.

2016 vintage - 12.4% abv

Bottle from the Ale Taster, St Neots. Dark brown with an ominous tan head and spotty lacing. Taste is an almost perfect marriage of chocolate fudge and strong, almost harsh whiskey. Smoky, spicy and engaging. Taste starts sweet but turns more bitter quite quickly. It’s smooth but lacking the balance I was hoping for. It comes right in the ambrosial finish however, and there’s notes of yeast extract, carob, and savoury whisky sauce. Leaving aside the hype, this is an incredible treat.

Opens with a dull coffee roast and bourbon booziness taking over the nose. Taste is coffee on arrival with tiny bits of cacao in the middle. Bourbon on finish with a lot of heat lingering. Medium mouthfeel. Awesome chocolate-covered coffee beans as its temperature warms up but then quickly turns into a hot, astringent booze-fest. Way too woody when drunk fresh. Needs 8-12 months!

Bottle from Hopt. At 11.9% abv. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, Bourbon, oak, some booze, liquorice, chocolate, touch of vanilla with a hint of smoke and ash. Flavour is medium sweet and fairly bitter with some alcohol hotness. Body is full. Quite nice, must have been a true smasher ten years ago, a rightful classic. Personally, I prefer the Founders Imperial and Breakfast Stouts, but this one is very tasty as well.

I never thought I’d see the day when I’d get an 11% impy on keg in Wycombe! Times they have a-changed indeed. Drank it in the Mad Squirrel during tempestuous weather, with lightning stabbing the rooftops and torrents of water cascading down the street outside. Most impy stouts make me think of a nightcap in a comfy armchair by an open fire; this one smelt boozy enough to light the fire with and make you feel comfy anywhere (which is just as well, because the Squirrel regrettably has neither armchairs nor open fire). To put it in a more RB-review style, it’s got a huge aroma of coffee and bourbon. Once I’d stopped inhaling the fumes, I got a look at this beast. It’s black and viscous with a middling tan head. Easing the first sip past my lips I was immediately struck by the really full, rich and smooth mouthfeel. It tastes of coffee liqueur, obvious alcohol, muscovado sugar, chocolate, vanilla and some roasty notes. A sumptuous treat of a beer that sustained me through the long swim to the bus station.
