A bit of backwoods pleasure without the banjo. This strong stout is brewed with a hint of coffee and vanilla then aged in oak bourbon barrels. Our process ensures that strong bourbon undertones come through in the finish in every batch we brew. We recommend decanting at room temperature and best enjoyed in a brandy snifter.

sfontain (851) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - APR 4, 2014
2014 bottle. Ill tell ya, I visited 5 different places around Columbus to score a total of 4 bottles of this stuff for 2014 at about $6 a pop plus tax. I got a single 2013 bottle last year thats still on my shelf. Straight up, this beer is overrated. Im not saying it isnt great, but its just not as good as the hype suggests. Bourbon County Stout crushes this stuff. Dark Lord too, though very different. Served in snifter. Effectively opaque black; foamy-frothy dark brown head. Improves vastly as it approaches room temperature. Aroma extremely heavy chocolate, sweet, malt, vanilla, coffee, alcohol warmth; subtle oak. Big big flavor is heavier on the coffee than I prefer, yet not heavy enough to be an all-out coffee stout; lot of booze here too. The bourbon is almost imperceptible at fridge temperature but theres still a lot of chocolate and vanilla. At room temperature, the bourbon is much more in-your-face. Smooth, bubbly, frothy, heavy mouthfeel is big but somehow not massive; sticky. Really very good, but Id be hard-pressed to make tons of special trips to get this for myself in future years. Over-hyped and the trade potential is the only thing that justifies the hunt for this. Walking into a store 5 minutes after its official release and the one case is already sold out. A young kid and his girlfriend appearing heartbroken that they were on the special email list and still too late 15 minutes after release. A Giant Eagle with a single case selling 2 bottles to a person when youre lucky to get 1 anywhere else. Its a really, really good beer, but the anecdotes around finding this drink overshadow the beer itself.

Medium brown head. Opaque black body. Roasty earthy taste with rye and coffee notes. Sweet earthy chocolatey mineraly taste with toffee and hot vanilla notes. Full-bodied. Hot, mealy, flattish mouthfeel, kind of sharp. Sweet vanilla fudge and coffee aftertaste with toffee and caramel notes. Lots of great flavours here, but too sweet, too sharp, too hot, and too much. Scaling it down a little bit and drying it out would have made for a much better beer. (0.355l bottle, from wine monopoly, Strmmen storsenter.)

0,355l bottle, 2016 version (12.4%). Pours oily black colour with good amount of head for a IS. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, sweet bourbon, roasted malts, wood. Quite bitter and sweet taste, alcohol is quite present, but isnt out of place. One of the greats.

Bottle at home. Pitch black with a small tan head. Full body with low carbonation. Well balanced sweet and bitter tones. Chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, bourbon, vanilla and oak. Very good.

Petroleum black pour, dense tan head. Massive oak tannins, roasted malts, coffee, chocolate on nose. Full body. The barrel is not dominant on taste. It leaves just a hint of vanilla. Chocolate. Minor coffee. More whisky. Solid hopping making balance. Incredibly complex. Perfect.

For a beer this tasty I expected a bit more in the aroma. The flavor has some coffee, but its smooth instead of grainy. Quite nice.

This is nice, real bourbon bomb. Full of roasted malts, vanilla, cocoa, licorice, raisins, figs. But the bourbon barrel notes are really up-front, very smooth, silky and balanced. The only cons are some boozy notes, which are noticeable all round. Feel like drinking some nice glass full of bourbon. Definitely worth above 4.0 rating, IMO should stay in a bottle for a bit longer to be even more better.

355 ml bottle at abv 11.9% bought at HK Brewcraft in Central.

Looks: Deep, tan blackish brown colour; Less than one-quarter finger head with residual soapy dark beige foam which fades in 15 seconds; Very good sticky lacing with barely notable bubbly carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant dark malt which can be smelt a foot away, with strong roastyness, strong chocolate, strong vanilla, roasted coffee, bourbon, strong oak barrels, strong cream, caramel, sticky toffee, raisins, dark fruits, waffles, alcohol, sugar, dry bread and grass. Very smooth and seductive!

Taste: Strong sweet, very rich dark malt, with strong roastyness, bourbon, rum, strong liquorices, smooth oak barrel, caramel, burnt toffee, strong burnt toast, strong black coffee, dark chocolate, floral, strong brown sugar, strong herbs, dry biscuits, strong lemon and strong bitter grassy hops. Very robust and layered. Wow!

Body: Full body. Oily and creamy palate.

Mouth Feel: Rich dark maltyness in a very thick background, of which oat smoothness played a big part. Liquor hit first, followed by French oak and strong burnt toffee and bitter toasty malt. Black coffee and chocolate come on strong as beer warms. Quite flowery with strong nice brown sugar sweetness. Biscuity with strong lemon to round. Powerful yet very smooth!

Alcohol: the 11.9% booze with bourbon barrel is potent, but never come across as train wreck at any point. The liquor is a combo of light bourbon and rum, pretty restrained and tasty. The best of all it is smoothed out by the rich French oak and vanilla which makes it so easy (and dangerous) to down. A well-produced rarity. A big Yes for me!

Hoppiness: Grass in nose. Strong herbs, strong lemon and strong grass in taste; Bitterness - burnt malt, liquorices and hops - is very strong for a lasting, very high astringent sweet-bitter herbal malty finish.

After Taste: Dry. Liquorish and very herbal bitter to mouth.

Comments: I normally dont like barrel-aged RIS because the barreled whisky / rum / whatever simply overwhelmed the otherwise well-brewed dark stouts. In this case, the brewers worked magic with the bourbon barrel with lasting vanilla aroma, and a nice neat rum-bourbon liquor taste. The booze never upstage the RIS proper, which packs a complex oat creamy smoothness, strong fresh black coffee, very toasty burnt malt, and massive bitterness. The overall effect is powerful yet very likeable. Very well made and very well managed. A fellow reviewer described this one being the Rolls Royce of RIS, which sums it up pretty well. A must try and must buy!

P.S. As soon as I snapped it up, I knew this one will be my perfect 1800th beer rating, and I got it right! :-P

Aroma; roasted dark malts, dark fruits, chocolate, fruity coffee, black-caramellic hops, bourbon n oak - wow, here are scents! Look; beautiful rose-beige cacao foam, black body, blanket sheety lacing, dense. Taste; roasted dark malts, superbowl of dark fruits, wineous berries, very high black chocolate factor, fruity coffee, black hops, creamy bourbon, oakey dokey notes - balanced solid smooth creamy black-fruity finish, warming. Feel; solid body, softish. Overall; the Rolls Royce among imp-stouts. When they have breakfast in Kentucky, we sip this slowly in Europe. [35.5cl.btl Abv%?(11.2?)
