2014 bottle. I’ll tell ya, I visited 5 different places around Columbus to score a total of 4 bottles of this stuff for 2014 at about $6 a pop plus tax. I got a single 2013 bottle last year that’s still on my shelf. Straight up, this beer is overrated. I’m not saying it isn’t great, but it’s just not as good as the hype suggests. Bourbon County Stout crushes this stuff. Dark Lord too, though very different.
Served in snifter. Effectively opaque black; foamy-frothy dark brown head. Improves vastly as it approaches room temperature. Aroma extremely heavy chocolate, sweet, malt, vanilla, coffee, alcohol warmth; subtle oak. Big big flavor is heavier on the coffee than I prefer, yet not heavy enough to be an all-out coffee stout; lot of booze here too. The bourbon is almost imperceptible at fridge temperature but there’s still a lot of chocolate and vanilla. At room temperature, the bourbon is much more in-your-face. Smooth, bubbly, frothy, heavy mouthfeel is big but somehow not massive; sticky. Really very good, but I’d be hard-pressed to make tons of special trips to get this for myself in future years. Over-hyped and the trade potential is the only thing that justifies the hunt for this.
Walking into a store 5 minutes after its official release and the one case is already sold out. A young kid and his girlfriend appearing heartbroken that they were on the special email list and still too late 15 minutes after release. A Giant Eagle with a single case selling 2 bottles to a person when you’re lucky to get 1 anywhere else.
It’s a really, really good beer, but the anecdotes around finding this drink overshadow the beer itself.
Tap at Browariat. Aroma: Heavy roast and bitter chocolate, vanilla, syrupy, bourbon, very intensive. Appearance: Black body with a great deep creamy head. Taste: On one side sweet and full in body, on the other side bitter, roasted and aggressive, nice. Palate: Semi-dry finish, high body, low carbonation. Piana średnio wysoka, w jasnym odcieniu beżu, dość gęsto zdobi szkło. W aromacie przede wszystkim beczka, czyli marcepan, orzechy, wanilia, trochę w syrop klonowy, czekolada jest zepchnięta nieco w tło. Przyjemny aromat. Niestety baza trochę nie udźwignęła beczki. Ciała nie ma tu za wiele, choć słodyczy nie brakuje. Nasycenie niskie. Alkohol na finiszu jest wyczuwalny, choć szybko zakrywany jest przez ostatnie tchnienie słodyczy. This was amazing. Mouthcoating complexity with chocolate, burnt notes, whiskey notes, and a subtle sweetness. It is so drinkable, and something I could have chugged easily. Aroma heavy dose of chocolate milkshake, bourbon and coffee. Late alcohol notes. Vanilla. Big and bold 8.0/10
Appearance : 3/5
Top: dark with copper cold hue, long lived top, almost fizzy.
Base: dark brown
Palate : full bodied, somewhat creamy, average carbonation, medium plus finish.
Taste: I am one of last big raters to try this. It kept old school craft vibe. Not overly complicated, even simple I would say. Heavy big stout that was very well made aged in barrel. All fairly balanced.
Other notes I like it a lot but don't love it.

It's a bit too sweet for me, which keeps it from a perfect score.
33cl bottle split with SimonBlok and his girlfriend. Pours pitch black colour with a small beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, strong fresh coffee, ground coffee, beef stock, mocca, slight vanilla, dark malt. Taste is is fairly sweet, soft bitter with a moderate dry finish. Notes of dark malt, coffee, ground coffee, mocca, vanilla, typical paprika and chilli taste, roasted malt. 33cl bottle, best by 29/11/2017, split with Gyhallmanti. Appearance: pitchblacj with medium beige head. Aroma: lots of cacao, kahlua, espresso, coffee grounds, licorice, slightly earthy, some soy sauce, vanilla and a trace of madame jeannette pepper, mint-licorice candy The more it warms up, the more bourbon aroma comes through. Taste: high sweetness and high bitterness. Notes of cacao, espresso, dark chocolate, kahlua, some almond paste. Palate: full bodied, oily texture and soft carbonation. Very good imperial stout. Balanced and complex.
