I poured a 12 oz bottle into a snifter after a year of aging, and I think that the year did this some good. Any rough edges - and surely there were some, given the volatile elements Founders has brought together - have mellowed, and the result is at once complex and robust. This gives off that distinctively woody, cellar-ish barleywine aroma, and it has the lighter body (relative to a big stout) that I associate with that style. Yet the "black" part of the label also makes itself felt, with bold coffee notes that fade to fennel, caramel, and molasses around the edges (much as the seemingly black beer starts to look deep russet near the bottom of the glass). The age naturally smoothed the body; subtle and pleasant carbonation remained, but the one-pinky off white had quickly faded to a thin ring, and lacing was minimal. A delicious beer, but certainly a strange one, which is exactly what you expect from Founders. Those guys are among the best.

12 oz bottle multiple times notes and a recently popped bottle. Pours dark brown to black in color with reddish highlights at the edges and a medium sized beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, some earthy hops, resin, dark fruits, berries, some alcohol young but not as much as the previous year, still drinks pretty nice today. Dark brown color with a moderate, fairly stable, dark beige head. Nice lace. Big hops aromas atop a dark rich fruitcake. Citrus and pine mix with dark fruits of fig, dates, dark cherries and berries. There are some liqueur scents rising, mostly I believe from the alcohol. I’m nit picking in that it is a bit too sweet in the aromas, but I do find the aromas very nice with all the fruit scents. Smooth, chewy to stick liquid on the palate. Sweet start with a real malt base. Caramel, marzipan, and light candi lead to A mild bitterness with some pine and citrus. Much less than the aroma suggests. A nice balanced barley wine. Late roasted and toasted malts. Reminds of a brew once brewed in the area - Nocturne Ale by RWS (RIP) or a strong OSA. 6/10

Deep brown color with a whispy head that quickly vanishes. Very rich aroma of toffee, dark caramel, coffee. Certainly some oxidation. Flavors of toasted brown bread, thick molasses (borderline blackstrap), chestnut, walnut, caramel. Some raisin. Thick body, slightly astringent finish. Not sweet at all. Delicious, and I can’t tell if I let it age a year or two too long, or a few years too early!

Aged 5 years! Deep dark brown with a thin bubbly light beige head. Big boozy brown sugar and oak and earthy dark chocolate on the nose with a touch of caramel and plum. Big huge flavor with robust cocoa, brown sugar, boozy honey and fruity undertones, lots of roast, lots of oak. This beer is tasting better than it ever has. The hops are taking a backseat without tasting stale. Some oxidation in the nose, but the flavor is sweet molasses and caramels with an assertive bitterness to cut through.
