shame on founders for creating this completely boring beer; nice appearance (cloudy dark brown with almost no head); aroma is mostly a roasted smell with some sugars; flavor is really bland (some grapefruit, some caramel, but very weak!) drink anything else there AustinMilbarge (681) - Denver, Colorado, USA - DEC 24, 2004
On tap: I’ve heard that this is the winning recipe from a local homebrew competition. It was a so-so brew. Not much in the nutty department, unfortunately. Smooth, and unremarkable. No complexities really open up as it warms. A little bit of carmel-y maltiness. Silphium (3198) - Traverse City, Michigan, USA - DEC 24, 2004
On tap at Founders. This beer confused me a bit so I confirmed my original thoughts by having another on a fresh palate. Cloudy orange-red body, thin off-white head. Fruity, toasty, caramely aroma. Tart, fruity body with plenty of caramel. Really, this seemed like a watered-down Dirty Bastard with lower ABV and a toasty kick. No nuts or smoke, nothing really indicative or unique to the style. Musty, yeasty finish. I’m one of the few people here who really likes brown ales, but this is scouting team material.
