Appearance: hazy amber, whispy white head, touch of lace,
Aroma: rich dry carmel malt aroma,
Flavor: rich sweet carmel malt flavor well balanced by earthy hops, wonderful old ale character, light bitterness
Aroma: 6/10; Appearance: 6/10; Flavor: 8/10; Palate: 7/10; Overall: 17/20
Clear brown pour with a thin offwhite head. Good aroma and flavor of earthy malt and toffee, the alcohol wasn’t detectable. The body is light with a liquorous texture and gentle carbonation. mvp (263) - Harper Woods, Michigan, USA - AUG 19, 2006
Tap at founders. Dark red color. Citrus like aroma. Rich amber and whisky flavor. Which was a suprise because it was nothing like the aroma. AlabastorJones (814) - Seattle, Washington, USA - AUG 16, 2006
at the brewery... very barleywine-esque onm all fronts, dry and malty, decent hop ballance but could use some more umph in the bitter dept. This beer will always remind me of the time the power went out at the founders brewery and we drank by candle light, everybody got rowdy and we started singing pirate songs, thus provoking the bartendress to bring us a sample of the scalawag (not on the menu that night) afterwards a member of our crew actually smashed a young man’s glass in a furious cheers, his only response "YYYAAAAAARRGGHH" Terminus (3702) - St. Louis, Missouri, USA - JUL 24, 2006
tap at brewpub-copper red with a faint off-white head. not much carbonation here and the body is sticking to the sides of the glass. big bourbon on thoe nose-vanilla, oak and some musty quality. some caramel malt underneath it all. big vanilla flavors, like an alcholic vanilla shake. body is medium and has more carbonation than i was expecting, which hinderd it somewhat. Lots of tingle on the finish from the carbonation and alcohol. not bad!

On tap at the brewpub on 4/28/06: Pours a clear dark copper orange with a well-lacing off-white head. Rich toasty sweet complex caramel malt and bourbon oaky vanilla aroma. Starts with sweet viscous earthy and oaky vanilla caramel with nice complex balance. Good authentic bourbon barrel character as well. SubstanceT (1092) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - JUN 26, 2006
on tap at the brewery. Hazy amber, thin white head. Nose malty. Taste mostly alcohol and grains. Great feel. Very good. ryan (3186) - Beltsville, Maryland, USA - JUN 6, 2006
Draft at Founders. Light brown body with a small, off-white head. The aroma is bourbon heavy, some cara-malts. The flavor is again bourbon heavy, some toffee. The body was fairly thin. Except for the whiskey flavors, this does hide the alcohol well. sersdf (1020) - chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 31, 2006
i forgot to rate this. had a couple days ago at the brewery. as cmubeerman notes, the bartender said it was like curmudgeon. well, i haven’t had the curmudgeon, but this beer was lousy. some superficial sweet fruit, but little backbone. i think i remembered it having a pretty sloppy flavor profile without any real sense of purpose. and i think i actually picked out pears or apples or something. Bartender said it would be quite a bit like curmudgeon...he was wrong. Poured a clear purplish brown with no head. Aroma was sticky sweet fruit and some malt. Flavor was overwhelmed with vegetables...but it had some redeeming malt character... no hop backbone. Mouthfeel was quite syrupy and warming.
